Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Hands down, my favorite book of the year. Well, of any year even. Simple, graceful, and I often felt as if I was reading about myself or a best friend. I finished it in one day and months later am still quoting it.

A beauty of a book tying together multiple stories and lives. I was very impressed with Obreht's ability to cleanly bring out these stories, personalities, superstitions and emotions springing from death and war. You won't be able to put it down, so start it on a weekend!

Leftovers

Because it came out in late 2011, I fear this book missed the collective radar for the best book of the year. But it appeared on mine and stole the title. Perotta writes in a way that brings characters to life in a manner one rarely sees. I'm infinitely impressed by his ability to create an entire world of believable events, life decisions, a damaged community, the juxtaposition of religion and fanaticism, families and individuals in the face of a fictional tragic event termed the 'Sudden Departure'. It's been a long time since I arrived at the final pages of a book and desperately wanted it to keep going, but The Leftovers delivered that feeling mightily.

For a long time I couldn't decide whether or not I liked this book. That includes after reading it. While in the process of reading it, there were moment where I couldn't stop turning the page and equally powerful moments where I would slam it shut and resist the urge to hid it under the bed. Both disturbing and tantalizingly addicting, I couldn't reconcile the mix of feelings I felt while reading it - or while not reading it. I know, however, that I had to finish it. Finish it, I did, and I still have the same quandry. What I do know now is that I couldn't stop reading it (despite breaks to reduce the trauma and incredible imagery), and months later I still remember it vividly. I know it has made me ask questions about how I perceive the world around me. I know I have discussed it with friends. And though it didn't make me feel good while reading it (or hiding it under my pillow), isn't it a sign of a great book when you can't seem to put it down even AFTER you've turned the last page?
