Gesture Life
by
Chang Rae Lee

This is the first book I have read by Chang-Rae Lee although he has several. I will definitely be reading others. Before I talk about the story I have to mention what stood out for me above all else. This is just written so so beautifully! The sentences are constructed so well, so flowing, so perfectly. So too are the paragraphs and the chapters. Right from the beginning of the book the language pulled me in before I even knew the story. Gorgeous writing is a very rare thing and sometimes it is too much. But I loved how this book flowed. There are so many professional reviews of this book that I need not go into much detail about the story. You can find that easily. To give just a brief summary, this is a first person novel whose protagonist is Japanese. A WWII veteran, having fought for Japan, he now lives in upstate NY. The book recounts some of his experiences during the war as well as his relationship with his adopted daughter and his adopted town/country. Not much happens. If you're looking for an action novel, this isn't it. If you enjoy character development and relationship stories this is a wonderful read. No wonder it won so many awards and accolades. Writing like this, like all good art, comes along rarely.

Steve Jobs
by
Walter Isaacson

There is no doubt that Walter Isaacson knows how to write a biography. If you haven't read his books on Einstein and Franklin, and you have any interest in these men, you should. He does a great job in researching and an even better job in bringing out the humanness of his subjects. Steve Jobs certainly has had a huge effect on the world as we know it now. Does anyone not know someone with an Apple product or who hasn't seen a Pixar movie? Reading of his background, his motivations, his demons, his delights, gave me a new perspective on the whole Apple history. Well worth the read even if it meant carrying a big and heavy book on the subway each day. I may give in a buy an e-reader yet. My only complaint is that Isaacson has certain themes, certain issues and he comes back to them too often. I felt like I was hit over the head several times. I can see the theme without having it shoved in front of my face over and over again. Sort of like a TV show or movie that has a character narrating too much of it because someone is afraid the writing alone won't get the point across. Still, an excellent book about a very interesting, if not very nice, character who has had a profound effect on the world as we know it today.
