Winter of the World Book Two of the Century Trilogy
by
Ken Follett
Phrog Professor
, January 01, 2013
This 2nd part of Ken Follett's Century trilogy is a gripping page turner. I had trouble putting the book down. It continues from Fall of Giants through World War II. I found this book to be as good as Fall of Giants as well as his earlier works, Pillars of the Earth and World Without End. Follett keeps his characters true to the era and the major events of that era are reported accurately. I recommend this book highly to anyone who likes historical fiction. I have recommended this book to all of my friends.

The Endurance: Shackleton's Legendary Antarctic Expedition
by
Alexander, Caroline

She was called Endurance, a new ship that got caught in the ice and crushed. Shackleton was her captain and a real leader who knew how to keep his men focused and working together. This is an adventure from the very first page. Photographs taken by the ship's photographer are found throughout the book and enhance the story; they bring you into the adventure with those who lived it. Shackleton was a hero and the author's description of his journey to rescue his crew is intense. You feel you are with Shackleton all the way struggling with the ice and the elements. A powerful narrative. In this year of renewed interest in antarctica the story of Shackleton's expedition is riveting.

Here Be Dragons
by
Sharon Kay Penman
Phrog Professor
, September 04, 2011
This is a beautifully written historical novel and love story. It is early in the 13th century and King John of England rules. Llewellyn is prince of Wales and has married King John's illegitimate daughter. Penman describes the trials and tribulations of that period taking you into John's court and Llewellyn's Wales in Gwynedd. She takes you into the emotional turmoil of that time. The character development is exceptional; you find yourself sympathetic with both John and Llewellyn as peace treaties are made and broken. Penman's writing makes you feel like you are part of the era and the people. It is historical fiction at its best, a real page turner.

Darwins Armada
by
Iain Mccalman

, January 01, 2011
This book describes the voyages of 4 men: Charles Darwin, Joseph Hooker, Thomas Huxley, and Alfred Wallace whose work led to the theory of Evolution. This is an exceptionally well written historical study of these men and their contribution to the theory. It keeps you riveted following the adventures of each man on their specific voyages. This is history at its best, clear, precise, captivating, entertaining, and enlightening. I recommend it to anyone who wants to know more about these men, their times, and the rigors of sailing in the 1800s.
