Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Unknown Terrorist

Richard Flanagan, the author of "Gould?s Book of Fish" returns with his newest novel, "The Unknown Terrorist". Set in Australia, "The Unknown Terrorist" follows five days in the life of "The Doll", a pole dancer. "The Doll" only wants to have a good life, like the lives she sees portrayed in the media, nice clothes, a posh apartment, and the right furniture. A chance encounter with a foreigner, Turiq, turns her life on its head, and she begins to question the life that she knows and the life that is being portrayed in the media. After a romantic encounter with Turiq, "The Doll" awakens to discover that the police and the media are searching for him as a terrorist suspect. A grainy photo of her with Turiq during their brief romantic interlude is blown out of proportion by the media, and soon the police are looking for the "unknown terrorist" accomplice. A true page-turner, "The Unknown Terrorist" is a scathing critique of a media and a government that foster a culture of fear over truth. Absolutely brilliant and quite terrifying!

Raw Shark Texts
by
Steven Hall

I recently read "The Raw Shark Texts" by Steven Hall, and could not put this book down! The second Eric Sanderson awakens in an apartment, not knowing who he is or how he has come to be there. He finds a letter from the first Eric Sanderson that leads him on a dangerous path of discovery that includes lost memories, lost loves, lost identities and a conceptual shark that feeds on human memories. This is a stunning debut that will captivate you from page one.
