Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Honest Truth About Dishonesty How We Lie to Everyone Especially Ourselves
by
Dan Ariely

A very interesting book with loads of insight. It allows you to see how lying to yourself is both a mechanism for self-preservation and a pathway to disasterous results on a broader scale (think Enron). How little white lies can turn into GREAT BIG LIES! How even armed with this knowledge you can still fall for marketing ploys and advertising. A must read for self-discovery and a better understanding of humanity.

Unfamiliar Fishes
by
Sarah Vowell

I love Sarah Vowell - I wish I had loved the book. Not enough history to be a book of history, not enough humor to be a book of humor. There is a little history and a little humor and wit but if you want to learn of the annexation of Hawaii you will be better served looking elsewhere - if you are looking for Vowell's wit read her other books or see her in a personal appearance.

Happy for No Reason 7 Steps to Being Happy from the Inside Out

A worthwhile book - if you have been active in cultivating your own happiness the book will remind you of the things you already do, if not it is a good place to start. There are certain passages that I think are very new agey but overall a winner.

Hedonist in the Cellar Adventures in Wine
by
Jay McInerney

Don't read this book unless you want to know more about wine and some of the people involved in its world. As a wine devotee I was consistently impressed how on the mark McInerney was in unearthing various delights -Salon Champagne, anyone? - and how spot on he captured the personalities of wine people (it is interesting reading someone else's impressions of people you know). A quick and enjoyable read.

Art Of Eating In
by
Cathy Erway

, September 24, 2010
The book starts slowly but interest builds as the author takes you inside the world of the New York food scene, her personal trials and tribulations and insights into the culture of the cross-cultural youth. The energy of city life is conveyed in the pages of this book. Overall an interesting read. Some of the recipes sound as if they might be good but I was not compelled to try making any of them.

Engrossing characters in situations that I could identify with make this an enthralling read. I found it fascinating that the tale of one family could draw me in and make me not want to put the book down.

A riveting piece of historical fiction centering on the plight of friends on opposite sides of the siege of Sarajevo. As the cliche goes I couldn't put it down!
