Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Hidden Persuasion 33 Psychological Influence Techniques in Advertising

Useful for teaching consumer consciousness, critical awareness and overt decision making. If combine with Joe Dominguez' Your Money or Your Life Transforming Your Relationship With Money and Achieving Financial Independence 1992 hardback or 1993 paperback (not later editions written by a different author) and Getting to Yes, Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In Roger Fisher, William L. Ury and Bruce Patton, the three books provide a basis for discussion of analytical thinking, compromise, civil discussion and Shared Inquiry underlying the social compact. Hidden Persuasion highlights invisible influences on behavior. It is essential to be conscious and responsible in the ways we choose to interact with others, honoring their autonomy and boundaries. LBJ and Everett Dirksen were on opposite sides of the political spectrum, respected one another as individuals who shared a desire to maintain a free democracy. They did not denigrate one another as individuals nor cast suspicion at underlying motives, they simply assumed that they had the right to look at the same data and come to different conclusions. Then they chose to find ways to work together to find common ground and make government workable. Hidden Persuasion unpacks emotional firecrackers which can ignite conflict if used manipulatively. Good basis for discussion of mature ways of interacting . . . or not. Also see the University of Chicago Great Books Program teaching Shared Inquiry. Hidden Persuasion provides understanding of why we make some choices and how we can become more conscious and responsible in decision making and social intercourse.

Inner Journeying Through Art-Journaling: Learning to See and Record Your Life as a Work of Art

Visual journaling, using blunt instruments to express feelings, much as Modigliani painted models not as they were, but as he saw everyone. More about who he was than what the model looked like. Exploration of emotions.
