Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. The Tigers Wife
by
Téa Obreht
Jonathan F
, January 01, 2012
Like a lot of people, I didn’t want to buy into the “hype” surrounding the youngest of the New Yorker’s “20 under 40” writers, but Obreht’s novel is wonderful. Set during the aftermath of the Balkan wars, the story skirts the edge of “magical realism,” mixing mythology and family history into a story of a young doctor grieving the death of her grandfather. It's a book that I wish I could read again for the first time.

Visible Man
by
Chuck Klosterman, Scribner
Jonathan F
, September 30, 2011
Told through transcripts of therapy sessions, emails, and other notes, Klosterman pushes the boundaries of what we consider a novel, while also writing an exciting and suspenseful story. Anyone who has enjoyed his observation of culture and society from his essays will love Klosterman's similar approach in this novel. Vacillating from the humorous to the bizarre to the uncomfortable, it also raises interesting questions about human nature and interactions. A wholly original novel!

Art of Fielding
by
Chad Harbach
Jonathan F
, September 25, 2011
The Art of Fielding is much more than a novel about baseball. In fact, two of the most interesting characters are not baseball characters, at all. The brilliance of the novel is that Harbach uses a wholly original story about baseball to explore many other themes -- love, struggle, temptation, redemption. Some of my favorite scenes took place far from the baseball diamond. And yet, if you are more of a sports fan than a literature lover, there is still much to love in Harbach's novel. A great debut!
