Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

First, Learn to Practice
by
Tom Heany

, September 01, 2015
Okay, I've read more than enough books on how to practice and I do have to say this has been the best for me. Thin, well written and to the point with a great graphic on the cover as a reminder. I highly recommend this book for those struggling to get into the groove of practicing. For me Mr Heany identifies practicing as more about hands and motor skills and less about learning. He sorts out the difference as getting out of your head and into your hands. That distinction was the key for me to separate learning (the head) from the practicing (the hands). My head would get wrapped around my hands when I practiced.

A very interesting old book to read from an different time and age some very good advice on life. Although often going against todays views I like her take on Christianity and Christ's teachings.

A great collection of tips/tricks to deeper meditation. The authors attitude towards this fractured and heady field is jovial and adds interest to the book.

Drive The Surprising Truth about What Motivates Us
by
Daniel H. Pink

Compared to his other books this one comes out a little pat in it's answers. Mr Pink creates an air of 'newness' to material that's I think may be common knowledge these days. As always with Danial Pink the book is well written and accessible. I hope my management reads the book. It was a quick read and I found some tidbits / sound bits that I can use at work (and at home with the teenager). The last third has the meat with it's more succinct scripted view of success. I liked the book but also read his other works (Free Agent and A Whole New Mind) for more meat on success too.

Stitches A Memoir
by
David Small

, January 01, 2010
As story telling is a difficult art the combination of words and drawings creates a tone that few do well without being either comic or harshly depressing. Mr Small's story is well drawn and told. I cherish my copy as it was my first Indiespensible and you always remember your first...
