Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Decades before THE SECRET became huge, Shakti Gawain put out this slim volume. While the techniques in it were not new, she described them in a concise way and gave simple techniques for putting them to use. A great read for anyone who wants to put the Law of Attraction into practice quickly.

Ex Libris Confessions of a Common Reader

This collection of essays will be a total delight to anyone who loves books. Fadiman rights in a style that is both erudite and self-deprecating. Her words touch on everything from the love of a fountain pen to Antarctic expeditions. A great read!

A surprisingly fun and engaging little read. Perhaps the enjoyment has as much to do with the idea of taking to the open road with nothing but you and a cart full of books than anything else. Funny, witty, and wildly adventurous, with a dash of romance thrown in for good measure.

Harriet the Spy 01

A classic that I first read at age 11 and have read countless times since, even as an adult with a 12 year old of my own. With the experience and knowledge of an adult, I read this book in a different way. I see Harriet as a bit of a groundbreaking for 1965 children's literature. There's nothing lady-like or frothy about Harriet. She's butch and independent and confident and has dreams and ambitions of her own. I often wonder what Harriet would be like as a 50-something adult today. A great read!

84 Charing Cross Road

When I first picked up this thin little book 15 years ago, I couldn't imagine getting much out of it. Boy, was I wrong! In relatively brief letters back and forth between New York and London, you get the feel for English bookshops, mid-century Manhattan, the life of a freelance writer living hand to mouth. Her words are funny, touching, and so descriptive in so few words. A complete joy to read.

The best book I've read this year! A slim volume that isn't too taxing, but a thrilling read from start to finish. Funny, original, and, in its way, thought-provoking. A must read!
