This book was delightfully unexpected. It centers around a magical contest orchestrated by two master magicians and involving our two heros. We follow their training and coming of age, and the beautiful and wonderous circus they create with their talents. The writing is clear and allows you to immerse yourself in the immagry of the circus because it is magic that creates the experience. You will be delighted with the win-win ending to the story.

This book is a wonderful read, full of literary delight and delicious vocabulary. It's written in two voices: Rene, a concierge for a building; and Paloma, a young occupant in the building. The topics covered are vast and varried presenting many thoughtful, hilarious, and poignant moments. I loved this book and the subtle exploration of what it means to be expose your potential fully to the world.

Hangmans Beautiful Daughter

If I were a writer I could better tell you how much I enjoyed reading this book. Like the river that is central to the novel - the Little Dove River - it invites you to dip your toes in and sit on a bridge on a lazy day and watch the goings on in this small area of Appalachia. The story has several main characters and each of their lives weave in and out of the others. There are funny bits, and sad bits, and mysterious bits that keep pulling you along as more and more of the intent and motivations of the characters is revealed. And, beyond the story itself, the writing is beautiful. After I would put the book down to go do some chore I would find myself thinking about the story, and then about how this story teller masterfully used words to paint a picture rich with feelings and personality. I recommend this book and hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
