Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Eye of the World Wheel of Time 01
by
Robert Jordan
Carlos

This is the beginning of the epic fantasy series "The wheel of time" by Robert Jordan. The feeling of these books is more Tolkienesque than G. R. R. Martin, but they also have a feel and style all their own. In this first book the characters are beginning to develop and the lay of the land is being set up. The series was just completed posthumously so you can go straight through. It's a lot of fun to read, and highly recommended if you're looking for some great fantasy writing to disappear into.

Cooking With Fernet Branca

I loved this book! It is an extremely funny parody of those "expat moves to rustic town in European countryside and falls in love with the food" books. It's rare that a book actually makes me laugh out loud, and this one did. From the main character's wacky recipes of mussels in chocolate to cat stew, to the hi-jinx adventures with his eccentric neighbor, this books was very, very entertaining.

Butchers Crossing

This book begins with two very different quotes about "Nature" from Emerson and from Melville, and these set the tone of the entire book. The main character, a Harvard dropout from the Northeast, moves west to commune with the wilderness. He soon gets involved in a Bison hunt and, well I let you read the book. Even for people who are not fans of typical "Westerns" I think this is an incredible, haunting and fascinating story.

Tranquil Star Unpublished Stories of Primo Levi
by
Primo Levi
Carlos
, July 26, 2007
Primo Levi is one of those people whom you want to hear everything they have to say. This set of short stories - previously unpublished in English - show a different side to this author who is better known for his Holocaust writing. I highly recommend this to any Primo Levi fan, and to anyone inerested in reading an excellent set of stories.
