Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. War Horse

This was not short book but I read it in just a couple days (I am a slow reader). To put it overly simply it is about a boy who loves a horse/or i should say it is about a horse that loves a boy and would do anything to get back to him. The horse is taken from the boy and the farm he lives on and placed into the hands of the war machine, where he is ridden into battle and has any number of officers killed on his back until he reaches the hands of a particularly caring man who insisted on the horses rehabilitation when injured and then tries to return him to the boy. It is frightening, unsettling, and heart warming, individually and all at once. so much so that it is hard to put down! I loved it and was actually sorry to have it end. I did put it down with a msile in my heart. This is not a children's book but it would be fine for the early teen ager to the very old who just want a good read! Thank you Michael Morpurgo.

Yesterdays Weather

Anne Enright has created a great book of short stories that are completely unconnected to each other! The effect is a little disturbing at first but by the third story/chapter the flow begins to make it all good. You are able to read each story and it is comforting to know it will end soon and you can move on to the next. I have to say that most of them left me wanting just a little bit more but the variety and fun of getting into each story was captivating and empowering. I loved it and finished it within two days!

John Adams
by
David McCullough

This is a tough one. There were so many good books put out or brought back this last decade. But David McCullough's John Adams was easily one of my favorites. This book brought John Adams and his whole family, indeed many personages of his day, so close and so fully fleshed out that my heart was right there with them all. I was lost in their wonderment and cried when they hurt or were in danger. I have recommended it to nearly everyone I know!

Shakespeare - Large Print Edition
by
Bill Bryson
Ted Washburne
, October 12, 2008
At 55 I have been a Shakespeare enthusiast since I was old enough to read a script. I have studied the bard in college and traveled to the various festivals in his honor around our country. Bill Bryson's book is the best comprehensive epistle on the master and it candidly exposes what we know, what some believe, and what is completely unknown in a wonderful and humorous manner. Buy it!
