Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Pirate Cinema
by
Cory Doctorow

Cory Doctorow tells 3 stories in 'Pirate Cinema' -- a teen urban survival tale, a teen legal and political thriller, and a teen romance. Trent McCauley is a 16-year-old creator of films made by editing together clips from the many movies of one famous deceased actor. He's great at this, less great in school. When the authorities discover the vastness of his downloading, he runs away to London. I enjoyed Doctorow's clever street kids who form Trent's new 'family.' They teach him to live on the street, eat from dumpsters, squat in abandoned buildings, and hide his identity behind a street name. Trent becomes Cecil B. DeVil and falls for a free-spirit girl whose family even call her by her street name, 26. The honesty of Doctorow's love story reveals an author who certainly experienced teenage love himself, though I was disappointed that the last pages of the love story didn't reveal the talent he showed in Marcus and Angela's romance in Little Brother, his previous YA novel. I took this as one more spot in Pirate Cinema where Doctorow's novel is a primarily vehicle for his activism to rationalize copyright law.

Enemy 01
by
Charlie Higson

, January 02, 2013
Not another zombie series, "The Enemy" features diseased adults feasting in teens and kids in a ravaged London. Children have formed neighborhood packs to seek safety in numbers, and each pack includes well-rounded characters who engage our interest and sympathy. The packs trudge through London and come together to form regional tribes, one of which occupies Buckingham Palace. Author Charlie Higson--a British TV star and author of the "Young Bond" book series--says his books engage young readers because his first readers are his 3 sons.

Midway through this YA novel, and the suspense is killing me. Just what is this maze? And who are the Creators?
