Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Z Plan: Blood on the Sand

I read this book in a day, because I simply couldn't put it down. I was with the protagonist, Cale, the whole way, flinching, holding my breath, and cheering him on. If it had been a movie, I would have been sitting on the edge of my seat with my hands in front of my eyes... peeking through them, of course! One of the things I loved about the story was that people behaved in ways that in my opinion, they quite likely would if they actually had to deal with zombies. Everyone is not a hero, people do think of themselves first, and make selfish choices. I love it! It made so much less predictable than many zombie stories, in that it wasn't always obvious what direction things would go. I do have one issue with the author, however... when do I get to read the sequel? This author has written a great horror novel, and I can't believe it is only his first. I highly recommend it to any fan of the horror genre, and see a bright future for Mikhail Lerma.(less) [edit]

Shes Come Undone

This was a wonderful book, I loved it! I can see, however, why some have had such strong negative reaction to it. I think it's just easier than to admit how uncomfortable they were reading it. It makes you look inside yourself and question your own moral code, shortcomings, and the skeletons in your own little closet. It also reminds us of our own cruelties and predjudices, and brings back memories that perhaps we would rather let lie and forget. This book was raw beyond belief, and I often found myself squirming while at the same time enthralled at the skill and insight of Wally Lamb. Fantastic!
