Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Early in December my daughter announced that I was not to look at,look up, preview or in any way find out any information about the book "S" or any information on either of the authors. I must admit that I never imagined that J.J. Abrams would co-write a book so addictive as his tv series 'Lost'. "S" or "The Ship of Theseus" is an addictive read on many different levels. There are several sub-novels or mysteries happening within the one book. A person can read "The Ship of Theseus" straight through,or as I did, read the handwritten margins of the two University students untangling one of several mysteries while reading "The Ship of Theseus. This is the perfect book for readers who are often left wanting more from a book, the plot and the unwritten plot that J.J. Abrams and Doug Dorst have so masterfully woven together a thought provoking novel of political intrigue, trust, menacing characters, and adventures on the high seas. I do recommend that readers start this book with an open mind and to be prepared to exercise the imagination and to immerse themselves in the world of V.M. Straka.

Finding Camlann

This is a quick paced 'mystery' with an absolutely delightful cast of characters. Set in Wales and Oxford England, Sean takes the reader on a journey to find Arthur's final resting place in Northern Wales. The imagery that is used is realistic and could almost be used for a visitors guide. I will now have to visit Northern Wales. The story line is not contrived or far fetched, but rather based on careful research. Sean's characters have realistic responses to the situations the find themselves. He presents the history of Wales in a very concise and loving manner so that the casual reader understands the complicated nature of the England v Wales politics that make the Welsh what they are today. Well done mate!

Cloud Atlas

I read this book on the recommendation of my daughter who had just finished her English Literature degree at the University of Wales Newport, she claimed that it was the best book she had read. With the movie right around the corner I decided that I had better see what she was talking about. I found David Mitchel's writing exquisite and enthralling, I could not put the book down. I was completely drawn into the story line and the characters. The book also made me think about our actions and ramifications there of in our future generations. I think that I have to agree with my daughter, simple the best book I have read.
