Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Just want to note that you don't have to be a comic book fan to enjoy this book. I am not a comic book fan. Not a supervillain or superhero either, but definitely understood their struggles. Both voices of the narrative are compelling and funny.

Culture of Opportunity
by
Rebecca Janowitz
Virginia Spatz
, December 27, 2010
This is a very readable treatment of Hyde Park's history and relationship to City politics. Will have a special interest for those with ties to the area and/or to the University of Chicago, but it's worthwhile reading for anyone with an interest in race and ethnicity in politics, economic development, city planning, "urban renewal," electoral and neighborhood politics and our current president. The most current chapters include substantial coverage of Chicago's attempts at education reform and the rise of Arne Duncan. Janowitz does not shy away from offering her own opinion throughout the book, but she does so in an insightful, often light-hearted way. Among my favorite such insertions: "Many Hyde Parkers, especially older residents, think that Hyde Park politicians exist to oppose any mayor named Daley. Some of them forgave Obama when he won the presidential election, and some did not." (p.218) See page 133 for a description of how the first (and continuing) Powells on 57th Street got started, in a nod to the author's father, the late Morris Janowitz, champion of local bookstores as well as distinguished U of C sociologist.

Sharon and My Mother-In-Law: Ramallah Diaries
by
Suad Amiry

, January 28, 2007
Funny and engaging, where anyone in the author's situation might understandably be angry and bitter, this memoir nonetheless illuminates the frustrations and fears of life under curfew in the West Bank. Portrays the mundane details of life in Ramallah and the challenges of travel in and out of Jerusalem for Palestinians.
