Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

All My Bones Shake Radical Politics in the Prophetic Voice
by
Robert Jensen

, July 16, 2013
I'm on page 17 & already I'm looking for a couple of copies to lend to friends. Jensen's basic message is, "Hey, folks, we're in several crises- moral, financial, political, especially ecological- and we need to do something about it!" He's already pointed out that fundamentalists- secular & religious- are far too sure their opinions are facts, enthusiastically endorsed by the universe. He points out that too many moderates have no faith in their positions, if they have any. His message to fundamentalists is "Grow up!" His message to moderates is "Buck up!" (or perhaps, "Man up!" or "Lean in!" in modern lingo.) I'm really looking forward to the next 176 pages. So are my friends- they just don't know it yet.

The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion
by
Jonathan Haidt
BobboMax
, January 30, 2013
Great book- difficult to read because it's so full of ideas and new thoughts. Haidt attempts, fairly convincingly, to explain the gap the thinking and emotions of conservatives and liberals, so that liberals can feel more comfortable and less disdainful with conservatives. (I don't think the book is really written for conservatives...) You may remember the book What's Wrong with Kansas? Haidt explains why Kansas is the way it is, without making a judgement as to whether that's right or wrong, since he's well aware that conclusion rests on your world view, not some set of "objective" facts. And I have to recommend that you buy it, from Powell's of course, because by the time you finish reading and understanding it, the library will be hounding you to return it so someone else can read it. Trust me, I know.
