Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Wild is an amazing book... as a woman who grew up in an alcoholic home and struggled with issues of identity and self esteem and my place in the world I really enjoyed Cheryl Strayed's journey (literal & figurative). The mistakes she makes, the conscious choice to step off the edge of the world as she knew it, the beauty and danger of the Pacific Crest Trail.... these are amazing parts of this book. My favorite part though? Throwing the hiking boot... to join the other hiking boot that fell off the mountain. There it is, distilled... to throw away what is killing you and move on... tenderly, on broken feet, to your future.

John Varley Reader
by
John Varley

I started reading John Varley's short stories and novels in 1980 when I was 14. I was a young woman growing up in the post 1970's south... surrounded by chauvinism and truckloads of crap telling me what it meant to be a woman. There was the traditional values people (Bearfoot & Pregnant)... and the progressive hippies my folks hung around (who, surprisingly, were mostly all Bearfoot & Pregnant!). John Varley's stories... especially "The Persistance of Vision," "Options," and " In the Hall of the Martian Kings"... spoke to my yearing for another world, another way to look at our world and maybe make new and different choices. The John Varley Reader: Thirty Years of Short Fiction is a fabulous collection of his early & later work! His introduction and prefaces to each and every story are amazing. I met John Varley in 1987 when I went to the World Science Fiction Convention...I waited in line to have him sign my new copy of "Blue Champagne"... and he is the most painfully shy person (who was gamely trying to meet the public) I have ever met. Getting a view into his life and his inspirations was wonderful. You'll even get to find out about his Shetland Sheepdog named Cirocco!
