I loved this book and have given it as a gift to several friends. The writing is brilliant and creative and evocative, and the story paints a scarily vivid picture of a portion of our country not only in 2004 but today. I think it is almost a must read.

Return of Captain John Emmett

If you are an Anglophile, or if you like mysteries, or if you are fascinated by World War One and its impact on a generation, or if you just like reading great first novels by new talents, you should read this book. It's similar in feel and sense of place to the Maisie Dobbs books by Jacqueline Winspear, but it's longer and has a big, sweeping backstory and many interesting characters. The hero/detective doesn't imagine himself in either role, and you watch him slowly come out of the shell he's been in since the war ended and not only solve the mystery (with a little help) but also decide to join the living again. It's a hard book to put down and a hard book to let go of once you've read the last page. I hope this is the first of many novels by Speller.
