Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Cutting for Stone

This was easily one of the best books I've ever read. It has fascinating, well-rounded characters and several interwoven story lines. The exotic setting and details of medical procedures add an educational element to the read, without weighing it down. The characters seem like people I've met, some wise, all flawed, but drawn with compassion.

French Lieutenants Woman
by
John Fowles

John Fowles' book is more than just a beautifully written Victorian love triangle. When I first read this book in my twenties, I was disappointed that the writer didn't stick to the formula, and kept "interrupting" with a modern view of the era's social mores. Now that I'm rereading the book, I am fascinated with the author's balancing act. If you read this -- perhaps as a school assignment --and dismissed it like I did, give it another try!

Stones Fall

This is an amazing, complex story, with characters who have real human limitations and emotions. Read Stone's Fall for an immersion in the past, for an engaging world that you can get lost in, and a mystery that is satisfyingly difficult to puzzle out.
