Before I Go to Sleep
by
S J Watson

Loved this book. It's a psychological thriller and a study of memory. The main character loses her memory every time she goes to sleep. At the opening of the book, she's living home with her husband, but has no memory of their life together. She keeps track of her days with a journal. As she recovers more and more of her memory with the help of a therapist, the story becomes a thriller, with Christine unsure of who to trust. Excellent, compelling story.

Paris Wife
by

Hemmingway's A Moveable Feast is one of my favorite books, so this novel was a natural fit for me. It is historical fiction, based on the same events Hemmingway relates in that book. The novel details Hemmingway's first marriage to Hadley Richardson in Paris in the 1920s during his early career. The story is told mainly through Hadley's eyes, which is certainly a different perspective. The book creates a vivid picture of what it must have been like to live in Paris in the midst of all the artists who built their careers during that time.

Great history of Saturday Night Live from the start of the show through the 90s, told through interviews with all the major stars, producers and writers. Really interesting look at the evolution of the show and lots of interesting behind the scenes stories.

The Graveyard Book
by
Neil Gaiman

I read this book to my son and thoroughly enjoyed it. An orphaned baby crawls into a graveyard and is promptly adopted by the ghostly inhabitants. The baby's adventures as he learns all the ways of the graveyard are wonderful as are all of the interesting characters he encounters. As the little one grows up, he learns the differences between living the ghost life and actually being alive. This is a great, great story!

Very interesting book. I didn't think I would buy into the premise, but the author does a great job of tracking the story forward and back through time.

Rope Walk
by
Carrie Brown
Dina

I really enjoyed this book. It's a coming of age story set in a small town over the course of the summer that the young protagonist turns 10. The story contrasts the old fashioned feeling of the small town with more complicated themes of modern life. She spends the summer with a young boy who unexpectedly comes to live at her house. They befriend an artist suffering with AIDS who has returned to his home to convalesce. The children spend afternoons reading to him from the adventures of Lewis and Clark. The detailed and lovely writing makes you feel like you are there with the characters.

Having read The Monk Downstairs, I couldn't wait for the sequel (I made do by reading other Tim Farrington books). This is another visit with some very interesting characters. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I loved this book. The author creates an interesting and diverse cast of characters. The leading character is a divorced woman who meets a monk living in her building. It's wonderful to watch their relationship develop as he meets her daughter and mother.

Girls Who Went Away The Hidden History of Women Who Surrendered Children for Adoption in the Decades Before Roe V Wade
by
Ann Fessler
Dina
, April 12, 2008
This is an extremely interesting book. It's a little hard to imagine how different things were before 1970, but this book describes the lives of young women who became pregnant and then "disappeared" into maternity homes. For the most part, they had no idea about labor or childbirth and ultimately were left at the hospital to labor alone and then aggressively pushed to sign papers to give up their babies. From the perspective of a mother who had her children in the 90s, it's unbelievable what these women went through.

This is a very interesting book set in England just as World War II is breaking out. It is a study of the characters first as young art school students, and then as they and their relationships change during the course of the war.

Three Junes
by
Julia Glass

I love this book! It is so beautifully written and the characters are people you are interested in and want to keep following when the book is over. The book has three sections, each set in June. The stories of the characters all eventually connect. One of the characters, Fenno, makes a cameo appearance in Glass' next book The Whole World Over.

Patron Saint Of Liars
by
Ann Patchett
Dina
, November 25, 2007
I am a big fan of Ann Patchett. I first read The Magician's Assistant and then backtracked to read this book. The Patron Saint of Liars is an interesting look at Rose, a woman who leaves her marriage and her family and goes to a home for unwed mothers. Her plans change and she ends up staying at the home. Patchett tells the history of the mother's home and the small town where it is located. All of her characters are interesting, but ultimately Rose is hard to figure out. She is unhappy and seeking something, but can't seem to really find what she is looking for.

The Memory Keepers Daughter
by
Kim Edwards
Dina
, October 13, 2006
This is an interesting book. The most compelling part for me was the way the characters changed over time and how the family secret molded them into different people than they might have otherwise been. The author develops the story and the characters over twenty five years, and by the end of the book, you feel like you know them well.

This is a very interesting book. It is both a study of the criminal justice system and a touching look at a mother-daughter relationship. The author, who is also a lawyer, provides a detailed look at federal drug laws and their impact on a family.

I loved this book. The characters stay with you long after you're finished. The time travel element sounds like a gimmick, but as it's woven into the story, it is completely believable.
