How Sweet the Sound
by
Vanessa Miller
WriterRani
, May 21, 2014
I thought How Sweet the Sound, by Vanessa Mille, was really interesting. I thought the story about Shar Gracey was important as she was the main character in the story and had to deal with her mother’s health, the lack of interest from Pastor Landon, and the way she was treated on the tour, but I found the historical parts equally important. I am from a small town in the Rocky Mountains and my historical interests are in Western History, primarily 1800s, so I knew nothing of the Restrictive Covenants or the Black Belt of Chicago. I had no idea that life was so difficult in the 1930s for African Americans in the Northern States. After I read this book I spent some time researching it and found out it took place in other large cities, not just Chicago. I would like to thank Vanessa Miller for bringing to light a part of American history that I knew nothing about. You all need to read this book to learn how Shar learns to overcome her situations and for an American history lesson. Disclosure of Material Connection- I received How Sweet the Sound, by Vanessa Miller, for free from Abingdon Press. I was not required to write a positive review. Bible NLT Wayfinding
by
Nlt Tyndale
WriterRani
, December 12, 2013
The Wayfinding Bible, from Tyndale House Publishers, was one of the most unique Bible I have ever read or owned. There are so many unique qualities that I enjoyed. It was hard to know where to start. I liked: the photos of historic places. the book introductions. the Historical Markers the different routes, flyover, direct, and scenic. the eight different review points. the Side Trips and Scenic Overlooks. I chose the flyover route, because I wanted to see what it would be like to read the Bible in a short amount of time. I thought the choices were perfect as was the length of each one. I was able to get a good idea of would be covered in the Bible. I would really like to see this style of Bible in a different version. I would like to be able to read this one in the King James version. A Bible study that goes along with the readings would be nice too. I want to be able to learn more about the Bible. I would highly recommend this Bible to everyone. Disclosure of Material Connection- I received The Wayfinding Bible, from Tyndale House Publishers, for free from the publisher. One Imperfect Christmas
by
Myra Johnson
WriterRani
, December 12, 2013
I thought One Imperfect Christmas, by Myra Johnson, was interesting. This book is not a book I would have continued reading if I had not been reading it for a review. I do not like reading books where the characters dwell in their own misery and guilt for the entire book. This book could help a lot of people though, who are having a difficult time in their lives and are unable to cope with it. Natalie Pearce was unable to cope with her mother’s stroke. She blamed herself for it and shut everyone out, even her husband, Daniel. I understand that everyone may not feel the extreme guilt Natalie did, but many may. They may be able to use this book as a beginning point to help them recover. While this was not my type of book, I thought it was well written. You will have to decide for yourself if this is a good book or not. Disclosure of Material Connection- I received One Imperfect Christmas, by Myra Johnson, for free from Abingdon Press. Blessed Church the Simple Secret to Growing the Church You Love
by
Robert Morris
WriterRani
, September 08, 2012
I thought this book was spectacular. Robert Morris has a blessed church, which is evident from the growth of his church and the structure which has been set up to protect it. As a lay person it is important, because I can learn how my church is doing. The information in this book is even more important for pastors and elders, and those who are involved in the daily running of the church. I never knew that a pastor didn’t have to do everything for everyone and that one of the most important parts was in preparing the sermon for the week. I also thought the information about Moses’ father-in-law, Jethro, telling Moses how to delegate his responsibilities in Exodus 18 was interesting. I think this book is a must for everyone from the lay member to the pastor to learn how an effective church operates. Please pick up a copy today. Jackson: The Iron-Willed Commander
by
Paul Vickery
WriterRani
, September 04, 2012
My Thoughts- I liked this book better than some of the other books I have read in the series, because of the attention to using quotes from Andrew Jackson and the people he knew during his lifetime. It was especially nice that Paul Vickery mentioned it in the prologue. That was when I knew that I was going to enjoy the rest of the book and I did. I must say that I really learned a lot about early American history from this book. I didn’t remember reading about Jackson’s involvement with the removal American Indians in my history textbooks in school. It mentioned that many still don’t like him and I don’t blame them. I was really excited when I was looking in the back of the book and I saw a list of the other books in the series. I really enjoyed this book. Go pick up a copy today! Aldo's Fantastical Movie Palace
by
Jonathan Friesen
WriterRani
, September 04, 2012
My thoughts- I thought this book was quite good. I always enjoy fantastical stories and this fits the bill with elves, dragons and sinister characters. I’m not sure the younger readers would see the connection between Vaepor and Satan, but it was something that I noticed when I learned about everybody going into the pool. Vaepor was taking away all of their memories and giving them a new life, and that is what Satan can do if we let him. I am not sure what to make of Nick. He doesn’t play a major part in the story and his character is dark. And for me, his death wasn’t devastating, because I didn’t know much about him. I would recommend this book to children who enjoy fantasies. Disclosure of Material Connection- I received Aldo’s Fantastical Movie Palace by Jonathan Friesen for free from Zondervan. Your Guide to Yellowstone & Grand Teton National Parks
by
Dennis Bokovoy, John Hergenrather, Mike Oard
WriterRani
, August 15, 2012
My son has always been interested in Yellowstone, so I thought this book would be a perfect book for us to study before we go on our trip. I was not disappointed in this book and neither was my family. We enjoyed reading the text and looking at the pictures. It was refreshing to read a guidebook that discussed creation and not evolution. It was also interesting reading about how some science theories don’t work when compared to creation, like carbon dating. One of the best features of this book was all of the panoramic photos with labels of the important locations in each photo. The descriptions describing each area of the parks was also excellent. I really felt that we could learn everything we needed to about Yellowstone from this book. We are now armed with knowledge about what we can see and do on our journey. I highly recommend this book to everyone of all ages, whether it is for enjoyment, science class, or history. Disclosure- I received You Guide to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks by Dennis Bokovoy, John Hergenrather, Michael Oard, Tom Vail for free from Master Books. Liberator
by
Bryan Davis
WriterRani
, August 15, 2012
My thoughts- This book needs an introduction that discusses what has happened in the other three books. I didn’t remember what had happened in the last book, so I had to struggle to remember as I was reading the first couple of chapters. Another thing that would have been helpful would have been a list of the characters and their roles. I kept getting confused between human and dragon and bad and good. This was the best book in the series because the action happens and the reader learns more about the Creator and how the Starlighters are crucial to saving the human slaves. The dragons are interesting in their alliances between themselves and with the humans (some their former slaves). I was interested in the relationship between Jason and Elyssa. I didn’t know they even had a relationship. I always thought the relationship would be between Jason and Koren. I would recommend this book to all teens and especially those who have already read the other books in the series. They really need the closure that takes place in the last book. The Orphan King: Book 1 in the Merlin's Immortals Series
by
Sigmund Brouwer
WriterRani
, August 15, 2012
My thoughts- Sometimes I have to search high and low for books that are suitable for teen boys. This book I would recommend, because there are no vampires, werewolves, and little romance. One thing I didn’t like about The Orphan King is that the synopsis on the back doesn’t have much to do with what happens in this book. It seems that it discusses what the series is about and not much more. I did like how the characters were developed and the details in the scenery. I was surprised at how much mental strength Thomas had. He was an orphan and raised in an monastery, to things that I thought would really decrease his chances of success. It would seem that others could learn from Thomas- that persevering through the rough spots will make you strong. I am looking forward to the other books in this series and I recommend this book to teen boys. Grant: Savior of the Union (Generals)
by
Mitchell Yockelson
WriterRani
, August 01, 2012
My Thoughts- The books in this series have been interesting and simple enough that they could be read as “living books” in a history class and so does this one. This book would work for most grades either reading aloud or silent reading. I have begun to read this book to my first and third grade children and they want me to read more. I enjoyed learning information I didn’t know about my distant cousin, like how he really didn’t have a drinking problem and how his name changed to Ulysses S. Grant. I know this series is about generals, but I would have enjoyed learning more about his presidency. I highly recommend this book as recreational reading or to be read in school. I just wish there was a list of other books in the series listed in this one. Disclosure of Material Connection- I received Grant: Savior of the Union by Mitchell Yockelson for free from the publisher through the BookSneeze Review Bloggers Program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Coming Apart the State of White America 1960 2010
by
Charles Murray
WriterRani
, July 12, 2012
This book was interesting, but I think that 300 pages for the main text was too long. It could have been shorter and gotten to the point faster. I have never thought that the census was that important and asked a lot of personal questions that it didn’t need to. This book showed me how important the census is and what kind of information can be gotten from it. Without this information there would be no book. I thought the last chapter was the best, because it was no longer about numbers and it talked about Charles Murray’s opinion and where the United States will be in the future. We can already see in Europe what happens when heritage is forgotten. As a country we need to get back to our founding fathers’ virtues, so that we can have a strong future without such a strong separation between classes. I recommend this book to those who want to learn how America is coming apart culturally. Surfing for God Discovering the Divine Desire Beneath Sexual Struggle
by
Michael John Cusick
WriterRani
, July 12, 2012
My Thoughts- This book is a must read for any man who may be struggling with sexual problems or may know someone who is. As a wife, I don’t think I would give it to my husband if there was not a solid relationship. There are many parts in this book that could help many with more than just sexual struggles. I think that is great, because some men may have more issues than just the sexual struggle. One of the best parts of this book was learning about the 3 Spiritual Counterfeits. They are the “counterfeit good,” “counterfeit truth,” and “counterfeit worship.” These are the works of the enemy and he uses those to lure us to him. It is his lies and temptations that keep men away from the true God and His promises. I would highly recommend this book to any man who struggles sexually. Disclosure of Material Connection- I received Surfing for God: Discovering the Divine Desire beneath the Sexual Struggle by Michael John Cusick for free from the publisher through the BookSneeze Review Bloggers Program. Man Alive: Transforming Your 7 Primal Needs Into a Powerful Spiritual Life
by
Patrick Morley
WriterRani
, January 02, 2012
While I am not a man, I have listened to what my husband has said about his relationship with God and I know this is the book for him and any man that has the desire to improve his spiritual life. I thought it was great how each chapter was about one of the seven primal needs that man needs to resolve to have a good spiritual life with God. The questions at the end of the chapters help the reader think more deeply about what he has learned. I highly recommend this book to all men.
