Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Beware this book if you have to get up early for work; you will read until dawn with only bathroom breaks when necessary. The characters are alive with all of our own strengths and weaknesses: uncontrollable desire for people we know will betray us, loyalty when you'd expect it the least. The author writes sentences so dense and dazzling I marked and reread pages again and again. I shall read every other word she has written.

This book has been on my reading list for years, but always passed over for newer titles. I've finally read it and am dazzled. The main characters are two couples who become friends in their youth and age through hardship and successes together. It sounds like a simple plot, and it is, but each scene is painted with exquisite care, and the depth of authentic feeling kept me reading late into the night until the last breathtaking scene.

The Kept Man

Jarvis is a young, hip, semi-widow living in Brooklyn; her artist husband Martin has been in a coma in a nursing home for six years, the result of a fall from a ladder. She sleepwalks through her days, visiting her husband once week, and avoiding contact with everyone else except Martin's best friend Davis and his art dealer Alice. Jarvis wanders into a local laundromat one Tuesday afternoon and meets Tony, Scott and Mel, three young, aimless men supported by successful career wives. The troubled friendships that develop force Jarvis to reckon with the impossibly hard choices that come from knowing her husband will never wake up again. Totally engaging.

A Visit from the Goon Squad

How can you not adore a book that sketches a very hung-over character emerging onto the street in the morning and describing the sensation ad being bitten by sunlight? Egan's talent is so far-reaching, her characters so alive and perversely sympathetic, her writing so inventive, that reading this book twice wouldn't be sufficient.
