Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Devil in Silver A Novel
by
Victor Lavalle
De Minimis
, January 01, 2013
This book is a mixture of several things, it's comic, horrific, and sad all at once. If "nuthouse literature" is a category, this should be alongside works like ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST and I NEVER PROMISED YOU A ROSE GARDEN, although it is not really similar to either of those in its theme or story. LaValle has some great characters here that you really care about. This book was really hard to put down, but I didn't want it to end, which is about as good as it gets for me as a reader. My favorite book of 2012.

Duane's Depressed
by
McMurtry, Larry
De Minimis
, August 04, 2012
This is probably the best book in what I like to call the "Thalia Cycle," Larry McMurtry's novels about the life of the town of Thalia, Texas, and specifically the life of Duane Moore, a small town football hero turned oil man who boomed and busted his way through the previous book, TEXASVILLE. That book was like a West Texas Gotterdammerung where the residents seemed to be in a constant state of insanity due to an oil boom and impending bust. This book focuses on Duane and an existential crisis that begins when he leaves the house and starts walking, in a town where all travel is done via pickup truck. A more mature book than TEXASVILLE, this has McMurtry covering one of his favorite topics, aging and the examination of one's life. I have re-read this book frequently over the years and never grow tired of it.
