Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Small Miracles
by
Edward Lerner

This novel is for the science devotee--not necessarily just for the adept whose education and life's work have laid a scientific foundation for understanding, but simply for anyone excited about the potential in cutting-edge scientific innovation. It's rather like standing beside the mariners who first noticed that as the ship sailed west across the Atlantic Ocean, the land mass of a whole new continent rose slowly above the waves. We are privileged to live in a time when we can see it happening. In "Small Miracles." Edward Lerner takes cutting edge nanoscience and weaves it into a high-tension mystery with action, biology, neurology, nanorobotics and, through it all, the reader never, ever loses track of the primary issue: The story is about human beings, their complicated interpersonal relationships and what happens when the object of a long-standing friendship is no longer human--well, not only human.

I rate it a 5 because of its title. My library has one copy, which I have just this minute put on hold. When I finished reading the book I'll be back.
