The Black Ice: Harry Bosch 2
by
Michael Connelly

I am a big fan of Michael Connelly. His books are always exciting to read. Harry Bosch is a jaded homicide detective. He has seen the worst that Hollywood has to offer as far as crime goes. When a fellow detective is found dead at a seedy motel, Harry is assigned the case. Cal Moore was on the narcotics squad, until he is found dead of an apparent suicide or is this really a homicide made to look like a suicide. Connelly takes the reader on a journey of intrigue and suspense while Harry investigates the slums, dives and dumpsters of Hollywood, coming face to face with drug dealers, alcoholics and other broken souls. Connelly gives a gritty and stark portrayal of life for those who have fallen by the wayside. His characters seem to be very flawed with no redeming qualities, but perhaps this serves the purpose of what he is writing about. The reader will race through this book to find out what really happened to Cal Moore.

Small Woman
by
Alan Burgess

Burgess does an excellent job in documenting the life of Gladys Alyward. He begins with her near death after having delivered 100 orphan children to Sian. She becomes unconscious and goes into a coma. Thus they have no idea who this woman is. What they discover is the remarkable and fascinating story of this small woman and how she came to China from her homeland of Edmonton, England, enduring much hardship on the train which only took her to Russia. She faced very dangerous situations as China is at war with Russia. Finally she does reach her destination in Yangcheng to work with Agnes Lawson. Still she is not accepted as she is called the white foreign devil. After working very hard to set up the Inn of Eight Happinesses, they are able to convert many working on mule teams to Christianity. But later on she is appointed as the chief foot inspector by the Mandarin and finally she has an opportunity to convert many Chinese to her religion. This is such a touching and inspiring story. This very plain and simple woman who had the courage to travel on a train to China, where she knew virtually no one. Many people along the way urged her to turn back, that it was much too dangerous for a single white woman to go to China. No she would not listen and not let anything discourage her from what she believed God wanted her to do. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who feels their life is too hard. Just read about Gladys and how she persevered with so many challenges -- a very courageous woman.

Testament
by
John Grisham

I am a long-time fan of John Grisham. I love his writing style and characterizations, along with descring the towns. His style is easily readable, so he appeals to a large cross-section of readers. Troy Phelan is very believable as an old cantankerous billionaire, along with his family of greedy, spoiled ex-wives and children. Nate O'Reilly, a washed-up lawyer who has failed rehab numerous times, is also made believable with the dialog. This is what really attracts me to his books -- his portrayal of real life situations and true-to-life characters. If they are less than desirable in their behavior and morals, then so be it. Grisham is true to his writing in every sense of the word.
