Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Lest Innocent Blood Be Shed The Story Of the Village of Le Chambon & How Goodness Happened There
by
Philip Hallie

Lest Innocent Blood Be Shed is a somewhat complex book. The main character is Andre Trocme, a protestant pastor. I found it strange that he was "unequally yoked" in marriage to an unbeliever. His wife professed no faith in God but had unswerving faith in her husband and his ideals. Andre's focus at all costs was the protection of human life. Do no harm. I found it odd that he did not stress the importance of the condition of the soul. He feverishly worked to save the physical lives of these Jewish refugees to the point of exhaustion. Protestants believe that Jesus Christ is the Messiah. I found it interesting that no conversations were recorded of Trocme talking to any of these Jews in hiding about the Messiah. After all, isn't that the message we expect from a protestant pastor to both Jew and Gentile? Trocme and his wife were both heroic and to be admired for their selfless lives, but I did not come away from the book with a feeling that they had the "peace that passes understanding" that we read about in the Bible. If the writing of this book was meant to be inspirational it was lost on me. I found no joy in either Trocme or his wife for all their efforts. I give this book 3 classic stars.

The Forgotten Spurgeon

Forgotten Spurgeon is more than I expected. I learned so much about Spurgeon's struggles within the Baptist camp in this well written book. His perserverance and loyalty to his convictions is to be respected and admired. Reading Forgotten Spurgeon has led me to want to read more of his many devotionals and study books. Forgotten Spurgeon has given me a sense of his heart and passion. I give this book 5 classic stars!
