Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Pete the Cat I Love My White Shoes

I was first introduced to Pete the Cat at a library story-time and was impressed by his cool. When Pete's favorite white shoes get covered in strawberries, does he cry? Oh, no, he just keeps singing his song and rolling along. He keeps stepping in different-colored stuff (teaches colors), singing a song (fun to sing with the kiddos), and doesn't go into meltdown mode when something bad/unexpected happens (hopefully teaches kids not to go into meltdown mode when something bad/unexpected happens). This is one *groovy* book!

Pilgrims First Thanksgiving

Nice, simple story with interesting (kid-friendly) details and good illustrations. It covers the journey to America on the Mayflower, the first year in Plymouth, and finishes with the First Thanksgiving. I just read this to a 2 and 3-year-old, and while they both listened attentively, it was a bit over the younger one's head. Nevertheless, I'd read it to them both again. Which is a pretty good recommendation in my book!
