Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Le Francais Par Les Mots Croises 1

Fourteen sections with simple lists of words such as farm animals and clothing. The words are presented with colorful pictures. The crosswords themselves are in black and white. The book is entirely in French and relies on the pictures to relate the meaning. I did not always find that this worked and had to look up a few of the words. It is fine for what it is - an introduction to some basic words. It would have been well worth it at half the price.

Dk Essential Shakespeare Handbook
by

Very aptly named book. I used this book in my recent goal to read all of Shakespeare's plays. There is a section on each play, including two recently added to the canon. Each section includes a synopsis, description of characters, act by act plot summary, and notes on the written and performed play. This book is heavily illustrated. There is hardly a page without a picture or two. Great for helping you read the plays (or helping you avoid reading them.) My only complaint is that the print is smaller than normal.

French Verb Drills 3rd Edition

As good as it gets. This is the only French book/cd/etc. I've come across that hasn't left me at least sometimes befuddled. Explains everything in small doses and has plenty of exercises. Answers and a verb list are included.

French Grammar Test Yourself

Excellent review for those with one year of French. It explains all the grammar basics and gives plenty of exercises. The answers are included. There is no glossary and most of the words aren't translated, but the vocab does not get complicated. When I needed to look up a word I found WordReference.com to be the best online dictionary.

Alex Raymonds Flash Gordon Volume 1
by
Alex Raymond

I got hooked on [t]Flash Gordon [/t]as a kid when I read my father's Big-Little Books. Afraid to touch the 70 year old books now, I was pleased to find reprints of the strip. The print is a bit hard to read, small at first and later faded. It is perfect at the end. I suppose they are facsimilies and later strips could be copied better. Not as enjoyable as the Big-Little Books which gave the sense of reading a book rather than a strip but a fine introduction to the fantasy adventure and fine art work of [a]Alex Raymond[/a]. (Publishers, please reprint the Big-Little Books - Flash Gordon, Tarzan, and all the rest.)
