Supremes at Earls All You Can Eat

This story of three friends and the men in their lives has laugh aloud sections. The author has a good feeling for dialogue, and sprinkles the text with wry one liners that stay in your memory. Realistic tragedy is also part of their story, and they are fun to spend time with -- you'll wish you could have hung around the All You Can Eat when Earl was running the place. Good for book groups.

This book made me a crossword puzzle solver. I never understood the hidden rules that Short explains in his introduction and examples, so I never "got" crossword puzzles. I'm still not an expert, but I recommend this book.

This book is about a lot more than just gardening, but it has a lot of gardening tips and recipes for garden-based food from the White House chefs -- and great pictures as well.

Everyone should read this book. Even if you're not a gardener, the story of how the garden came to be, as well as stories from other community gardens are interesting and inspiring. If you are a gardener or a cook, this book will be a treasure, because they tell you about what they grow, and the head chef and pastry chef of the White House include seasonal recipes using the the garden produce. They keep bees, too. The focus on better health through nutrition and exercise is a key part of the book, and there are some interesting facts that you may not have considered. In the audio book version, every person who is involved tells their own story, which is intriguing, but in the print book the photos are amazing. Buy one for yourself and one for a friend.

I never understood crossword puzzles or why people liked them until I read this book. Mr. Shortz gives examples of crossword conventions that are vital to knowing how to solve the puzzles -- but which before this book were unwritten. Highly recommended.
