War Brides

World War II stories aren't usually my cup of tea, but this tale is set in England, featuring teenagers and young adults. The only American in the story ends up in England as well. It focuses on civilian life and war time struggles in the city and country. After I read this book, a PBS documentary confirmed much of the detail, especially life for the girls who had to take over farming when all the men became soldiers. The ending was mostly a happy surprise. I not only recommend this book, I've already loaned it to a friend.

This collection of stories was written in honor of Andre Norton by 15 authors. The selection runs the gamut from OK to very good, and each story has some relationship to the honoree. A very sincere tribute and I'm glad to have read it.

Wizard At Large Magic Kingdom of Landover 03
by

Enemies working together; making magic happen where it no longer exists; try, try, try again. Lots of themes in this 3rd volume of the Magic Kingdom of Landover. Next - the Tangle Box - can't wait to get started.

Sacred Ground

Even though this is a work of fiction, I know the author does a lot of research before writing. This story contains Native American points of view about labor and prejudice that ring true and so do the many bits of medicine lore. It made me want to know MY spirit animal. A private investigator hired to check out a business man finds mysteries on different planes of existence ... just my cup of tea. A page turner, for sure.

Heartlight Light 4
by
Marion Zimmer Bradley
Marlena
, March 20, 2016
From 1960 to 1999 with reminisces from the 40s; this story builds slowly with a mildly surprising end. Marion Zimmer Bradley describes each character with details about their thoughts as well as their physical appearance. She made me feel as though the characters were known to me. This is a slow read, you don't want to miss anything, just relax and enjoy.

Foundation & Chaos Second Foundation 02
by
Isaac Asimov, Greg Bear
Marlena

This second book of the second Foundation Trilogy felt much more like Isaac Asimov's writing. The continued development of the human race and the robots who are also changing is told in great and thought provoking detail. The surprising end stories (more than one character will continue) made me eager to read the final book of the trilogy.

This second book of the Secrets of the Witch World trilogy gives more explanations about the beginnings of war and how enemies find they have more in common than they ever could have guessed. The unanswered questions will hopefully be resolved in the final book in the series.

Nimishas Ship

This is a fun, fast read. Anne McCaffrey develops agreeable and believable characters and puts them in tough situations. Their logic and planning gets them in the clear and getting even with idiots is a happy by-product.

Race Across Alaska: First Woman to Win the Iditarod Tells Her Story
by
Libby Riddles and Tim Jones
Marlena
, January 16, 2009
I like the daily journal format. The page layout allows inserted text with story related facts and insights, just where they need to appear. This is a story of luck, courage, instinct and trust. It's much more about dogs and their musher than the fact the musher is a woman. The book is also a page turner!

Winterdance The Fine Madness of Running the Iditarod
by
Gary Paulsen
Marlena

I'm a fan of the Iditarod and this true story about the coming of age of one musher and his decision to run the Last Great Race made me laugh out loud and shed some tears. The story of his 1985 race illustrates how much (and why) the race rules have evolved through the years. If you love dogs and nature, this is the book for you.

This space story from 1969 is packed with aliens, hard luck and intrigue. It also has a surprise ending. Don't let the date put you off, the plot and characters are timeless. I read most of it in one afternoon, couldn't put it down.

Sioux Spaceman

Vintage Andre Norton, from 1960. I don't know how I missed it all these years and am very glad to have found it. This small (155 pages) novel is packed with action, mystery and murder. Worth reading, not just because it's a great story, but to see Andre Norton's writing from so long ago.

This addition to the Witch World series is set early in the time line of Andre Norton's world. It tells the story of another Gate, and the person who escaped through it for a new chance at life. She changes, and those she meets are changed by her. Fun to read.

Omega

This concluding story stands on its own; you won't be lost if you haven't read the previous stories in the series. Politics, love, religion, mystery, the power of the press and a race through space keeps your attention. The Omega secret doesn't get revealed until the final pages, although in retrospect there were plenty of clues.

Fur Magic: Magic 3
by
Andre Norton
Marlena
, February 11, 2008
I bought this book because I love the author's work. It's written for the younger reader, but still a good tale for exercising an adult's imagination. The story is a Native American tale of finding courage, looking through the eyes of another and learning that even the bad guys have a reason for what they do. Magic and logic both play a large part in this fast reading adventure story.

Diplomatic Immunity Miles Vorkosigan 10
by
Lois M Bujold
Marlena
, September 17, 2007
The further adventures of Miles Vorkosigan as his belated honeymoon turns into a diplomatic and life threatening challenge. Full of mystery, romance, military planning, and future versions of biohazards, the reader moves from normal spaceship travel into quaddiespace. Then it gets interesting; a page turner, indeed.

Asimov's Chimera: The New Isaac Asimov's Robot Mystery (New Isaac Asimov's Robot Mystery)
by
Mark W. Tiedmann and Mark W. Tiedemann
Marlena
, August 14, 2007
Sam Spade meets Science Fiction. A great mystery, with pieces of a puzzle (or two) being found and reassembled into a surprising end by a future Private Eye. This novel, written very much in the style of the late Isaac Asimov, continues his world of the famous Three Laws. It was a pleasure to read this fast moving story that doesn't rely on four letter words to express action or emotion.

Rest In Pieces
by
Rita Mae Brown
Marlena
, January 21, 2007
One of the Mrs. Murphy mystery series; the first one I ever read. The story line is good, Mrs. Murphy (a cat) and her friend Tucker (a dog) help their Mother (Harry) and save her from - well that would be telling. I loved all the animals' dialogues, from the owl to the horses. This murder mystery comes complete with a surprise ending. I probably won't read any more of this writer's books though, because of all the foul language, sprinkled here and there without rhyme or reason. It didn't add to the story in any way and spoiled the enjoyment for me - such a shame.
