Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Not Your Mothers Book on Being a Woman

It's not always easy being a woman, and sometimes you just need a good laugh. That's when you should reach over to your end table or night stand, grab your e-reader or book and laugh yourself silly reading the stories in "Not Your Mother's Book . . . on Being a Woman." Men, you should read this too. You could learn a lot! There are no sad stories in this delightful series, and some are even a little edgy, making them even funnier. This is the first of a whole series of Not Your Mother's Books in the works. If it's true that laughter makes you live longer, this series is gong to be good medicine!

Not Your Mothers Bookon Dogs

I hadn't owned a dog for 45 years. I didn't realize how much love I was missing out on. I love my Dane/Labradoodle so much and I gravitate towards all dog books and dog magazines now, and am out of control when it comes to dog toys, ears, hoofs, bones, and treats. I read this book three times, and if there is a sequel, I'll be first in line. "Not Your Mother's Boook . . . on Dogs" is filled with humor. Dog lovers have told their tails . . . er, tales in ways that will warm your heart and make you laugh out loud. Buy it, read it, and if the dog uses it for a chew toy, buy another copy because no dog-loving home should be without one.

Not Your Mother's Book . . . on Being a Stupid Kid

"Not Your Mother's Book . . . on Being a Stupid Kid" is the second book in a new anthology by Dahlynn and Ken McKowen of Publishing Syndicate. The McKowen's, who co-authored "Chicken Soup for the Soul" books for 10 years, have produced a winner with their new series. "NYMB . . . on Being a Stupid Kid" is filled with nonfiction stories that are humorous and sometimes a bit edgy . . . the stupid things the writers did as kids. This book brings you great writing skill, great editing, and even greater laughs. The 60-or-so stories in the book will make you laugh . . . sometimes at yourself . . . . and they will make you want to read one of the other NYMB books: "on Being a Woman," or "on Dogs," already released; "on Travel" and "on Parenting" planned for a spring 2013 release; and dozens more in the works. Each time one of these funny, real-life books is released, I devour it and wait impatiently for the next batch of laughs.
