Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Mississippi Steamboat Era in Historic Photographs Natchez to New Orleans 1870 1920

Joan Gandy

Having been born and raised in Natchez, Mississippi (oldest establishment on the Mississippi river, 1716) I found this collection of photographs most interesting. There are a lot of photos of Natchez, MS. in this book and I ran across one of the river steamboats my father, William Clement Stacks, Sr. worked on as a steam and diesel engineer, the Betsy Ann. Another boat he worked on is not pictured, the Florence. This is a collection of photos that shows how the people lived and, in a way, their hopes and dreams. This book is one of the best collection of photos and comments I have seen about the Mississippi river. Some one needs to make a photo history of modern day river traffic on the Mississippi and the towns and the cities along it course.

When The Mississippi Ran Backwards Empire Intrigue Murder & The New Madrid Earthquakes Of 1811 12
by
Jay Feldman

This great book caught my eye having lived in Natchez, Mississippi on the Mississippi river. Jay Feldman gives a most informative history of the times when the New Madrid series of earthquakes occurred. A lot of forgotten history is brought back to life. The author leads up to the historical events that happened before the series of quakes struck. The main figures of history were: Andrew Jackson, James Wilkinson, Nicholas and Lydia Roosevelt (Built the first steamboat to navigate the Mississippi river), Richard Mentor Johnson, William Henry Harrison, and Tecumseh, the Shawnee leader. All these played an important part in shaping the history before and after the quakes. Many other historical characters are in the action also. Feldman tells of how the earthquake exposed a murder, how the first steamboat on the Mississippi survived the earthquake, and even how it had a part in shaping what was to become the war of 1812. The history of New Madrid is told and how the earthquake effected the whole country. The New Madrid series of quakes are considered the most powerful quake to hit the USA and is said by the experts to have been more powerful than the Great Lisbon earthquake. Those who are history buffs of the Mississippi river should read this book.
