The Natchez Indians
by
James F. Barnett
mudcatmls
, September 06, 2013
One of the most hated tribes in the area by other Indian tribes. The Natchez Indians is how Natchez, Mississippi got its name. In rough English translation the Natchez called the area they lived in, the now St. Catherine creek area, White Apple Village. Natchez came close to being called by this name, White Apple. The Natchez date back to around 3,000 B.C. and were Sun Worshipers and had a class system, the lowest being Stinkerds. This book is a very well done history of a minor Indian tribe.

Cosmology: The Science of the Universe
by
Harrison, Edward
mudcatmls
, September 05, 2013
This second edition of a very erudite Cosmology textbook has some chapters rewritten with seven new chapters added. It has projects that you can do at home, and comments at the end of each chapter to think about. I have read both editions and they are both something to continue to reread and ponder on.

Cosmology The Science Of The Universe
by
Edward R Harrison
mudcatmls
, September 05, 2013
One of the very best textbooks on Cosmology I have ever read. The second edition of this textbook has seven new chapters in it. Harrison is a deep thinker and knows how to get you to thinking deeply about our universe. He explains why universe is more correct than Universe. When we think of Universe capitalized we speak of it as a known entity and it is not a known entity. The thoughts and exercises at the end of each chapter are one thing that makes this textbook so great.

Charles Dahlgren of Natchez: The Civil War and Dynastic Decline
by
Herschel Gower
mudcatmls
, September 05, 2013
A most fascinating book written about a family and the man who lived a very hard life during the War Between the States. The book describes his adventurous, full of hardships life. The book tells of how this individual tried to sell guns, and cannons to the Union and the Confederacy but neither party was interested. He spends a great fortune on building Dunleith (1856) and then can not afford to live in it. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Dahlgren called this house Ruthland. A very historically accurate account of a family in the Deep South, Natchez, Mississippi.

Natchez on the Mississippi
by
Harnett Thomas Kane
mudcatmls
, September 05, 2013
Harnett Thomas Kane has written a very accurate and humorous history of the oldest establishment on the Mississippi river, 1716. He does a very good description of the people who first lived in the old antebellum houses and gives humorous and accurate descriptions of the type of people they were. A very well written book about one old historically rich city.

Majesty||||The Majesty of Natchez
by
Steven Brooke
mudcatmls
, September 05, 2013
This is one of the most beautiful books ever published on Natchez, Mississippi, the oldest establishment on the Mississippi river. I was born and raised in Natchez and have seen all the houses in this book first hand and passed by the ones in downtown Natchez most every day and can attest to the beauty of this town and the beauty of its location. Natchez has the most eclectic antebellum structures in the Deep South. Natchez has over 500 antebellum structures and this book pictures some of the best ones. Natchez lives up to the title of this book and it is a city that is hard to forget.

Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Cant Stop Talking
by
Susan Cain
mudcatmls
, September 05, 2013
I have recently finished reading this great book on some very important personality types, the introvert. I am an introvert, but can, at times, be out of my box. This is a book that I highly recommend to introverts that will help you to better understand who you are as a person, how important you are, and how to not let extroverts tell you that you need to change for the better in their way of thinking. I like how the author tells us that it was introverts that changed the world in many ways. Introverts are scientist that make great discoveries, business people, artist, and great thinkers who have changed the world for the better. I like how the book helps the introvert how to make it in a very extroverted society. Kudos to the author of this great book that I whished had come out many years ago!

Tales of the Mississippi
by
Ray Samuel
mudcatmls
, August 06, 2013
I bought this book (ordered it from Publishers Clearing House)back in 1967 when I was going to college in Keene, TX. Having lived on this river in Natchez, Mississippi from a child to adult this book interested me greatly. It is the type of book that tells history of "Old Muddy" with out all the Hollywood Glory. The history in this book is as accurate as it can possibly be and tells the truth about the race between the Natchez and the Robert E. Lee by showing that the Currier and Ives prints are incorrect as to showing the two steam boats side by side. The Robert E. Lee (AKA Hopping Bob) left the Natchez eating its smoke. Another thing that makes this book great is all the etchings by Alfred R. Woad Civil War Correspondent. The etchings are very accurate and beautiful making the history of the book stand out. The photos and etchings of the old 1800s steam boats tell their own "stories" showing how the people lived back then. The section on the Civil War (if you live in the South it is known as the War Between the States) as related to the Mississippi river, is told with sorrow and feeling fore those on both sides of the war. Another good section is the story of the very first steam boat having its first run on the river and the earth quake that had its epicenter close to Ciro and how this first steam boat managed to survive. This mighty earth quake covered the area of the USA from the Rockies to the eastern sea board and did very much damage and changed the course of the river in various places. It has been said of this earth quake that it covered a larger area than the Lisbon earth quake. There is so much history of the USA in this book that it is a real treasure trove of facts and legends.
