These Truths: A History of the United States
by
Jill Lepore

This is an amazing history of the United States. It is so much more comprehensive than what you learn in public school. It's what public school history books wish they were! It's like, 800 pages long and I haven't yet finished reading it cover to cover. Because it's chronological, you can skip around. There's so much good information; after a while I realized that I was underlining about 40% of the first few chapters. (I'm trying to be more picky on what to highlight and underline.) There's plenty in this book that should have been in taught in school, like learning about Benjamin Lay, an awkward, little man that was centuries ahead of his time. Nowadays we would call him 'progressive'. The book covers up to early 2016. I can't recommend this book enough! If you are passionate about the history of the United States then this book is a must.

Peoples History of the United States 1492 Present
by

Wow! This is something that high-schoolers in the United States should absolutely read. This book is more realistic, more accurate, and cuts through the filters that history textbooks go through. There are many incidents in history where the U.S. did the wrong thing and history textbooks scrub the truth, either the entire topic or at least the painful parts of truths are so it doesn't seem so bad. This book tells the truth whether it is good or bad, from American history. It helps me see things in our history from a different viewpoint of what I was taught in public school. It is a big, thick book but it's not a hard read. I highly recommend this book!

Astoria: Astor and Jefferson's Lost Pacific Empire: A Tale of Ambition and Survival on the Early American Frontier

If you like to read about Oregon history then I highly recommend this book. I had a little trouble getting into this book but once it finally ensnared me I couldn't put it down! About half way through, I went back and re-read the first bit of the book which really helped wrap it all together. I don't want to give away anything in the story but if you read this book I think you'll see what I mean about re-reading the first part. It also helps if you have knowledge of the geography of the Columbia river gorge, as it helped me visualize where the explorers were at throughout the story. I *really* enjoyed this book. I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars just because I had a little trouble getting hooked near the beginning. I will definitely re-read the whole thing again at some point in the near-future.

Astoria: Astor and Jefferson's Lost Pacific Empire: A Tale of Ambition and Survival on the Early American Frontier

I was excited to read the story of what happened in the Oregon territory after Lewis and Clark left. The writing didn't grab me at first; I had trouble getting into it, maybe because it is very fact-heavy. Lots of information. But once it grabbed my attention it held it tight! Eventually I went back and started the book over and the 2nd time I was able to get more into it and it clarified a few things that I didn't clear from my first reading. It might be because there is a large cast of characters; hard to keep track of everybody. There were many areas that I read out loud to my husband, who is also a native Oregonian, info in the book that was amazing, I just had to share. When I finished I went back and re-read some sections because it was so good! (maybe its just me who had a rough start). Either way, its a really good read!

George Washingtons Secret Six The Spy Ring That Saved the American Revolution

I was SO surprised at just how great this book is! I'd been browsing Powell's online, looking for books on the Culper Spy Ring and thought this book looked good so I thought I'd give it a try. It wasn't till it was delivered that I read who the authors were, and my first thought was 'oh no; did I just waste my money?', because a fan of Fox News I am NOT! But because the book is about U.S. History and not about anything current or contemporary, I went ahead and gave it a try. I'm so glad I did! It is well written and it even has a page with a copy from Tallmadge's code book! There is also a section just about who 355 may have been (other than Anna Strong). So glad I ignored who the authors are and read it anyway! I highly suggest it to anyone interested in more info/ accurate info on the Culper Ring beyond what AMC's show 'Turn' covers.

Watership Down
by

This is one of my all time favorite books. My old copy is literally falling apart so I need a new one for myself and I'm going to buy 2 copies so my nephew can enjoy it too. It is such a great classic. If you have read and enjoyed any of the Warrior Cats novels (by Erin Hunter) then you'll definitely enjoy Watership Down, because it is a very similar feeling in that you are reading about a pack of animals that survive in the wild, based in Britain, and they have similar issues to resolve in the book. Only this is rabbits instead of cats. Such a great read!

Plants of the Pacific Northwest Coast Washington Oregon BC & Alaska 2nd Edition

This is a really fantastic book! It even tells you which plants are edible and which are not. It's really sturdy so you can take it with you on hikes to help identify plants along your way. I've had my own copy for quite a few years and have used it more times than I can count. I was delighted when I found a copy at Camp Namanu (CampFire summer camp) for the kids to use. Not that this is directed at kids; it's a more of a reference book. And its chock-full of information on the native flora. I like the little maps that show where the specif plant does and does not grow; a very helpful guidebook.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Having already read most of the comments from other people, a common critique I noticed was that the characters weren't deep enough and/or weren't 'hero enough'. I disagree! I loved the main character and could totally relate to her! That's why she seemed so believable to me. Like her, I have a tendency to not be assertive enough, to stay sitting so the boat doesn't rock. And it's a neat juxtaposition to have the protagonist not be aggressive. I found this book and main character so refreshingly different. I couldn't quit talking about it and my husband finally said, "quit telling me about it so much; I want to read it as soon as you're done!" It was hard, not talking about it for a whole week. Stephen Colbert and Sherman Alexie were right; this book is a great read(Bump!) and shame on amazon for being overly-capitalistic. A big thank you to The Colbert Report for publicising Powell's! The one and only issue I have, has nothing to do with the story itself; I got a "signed" copy, and while I was expecting a scribble for a signature, but I was expecting more than her writing just her initials. Especially after she went on Colbert's show and said that Powell's told her she's the fastest author to have signed 10,000 books at one time! Part of her being the fastest has to be because she only did her initials. I was disappointed about that, but it has nothing to do with the quality of the book itself. 5 stars!

Warriors 01 Into the Wild
by
Erin Hunter
merlins.crazy.mom
, July 11, 2014
INTO THE WILD is the first book in a long, amazing series about clans of feral cats. It is so enjoyable, so hard to put down! If you are going to start on this amazing journey with this first book, I suggest you go back to the map page and to the pages with the cat names and descriptions repeatedly while reading the story. It wioll help you in the long run because there are so many cat characters and it's hard to keep track of them all at first. The more books of the series that you read, the easier it is to keep track of which cats belongs to which clans, but at first it can be a bit overwhelming. Stick to it, though, cuz it's so worth it! (Erin Hunter, the author, isn't a real person! There's at least two different people that are writing this series. If you look at the 'special thanks to' page, you'll find the +real+ name of the author!)

Ahoy thar, mateys! If ye be itchin' for a game to play with the kiddies as well as adults, this be the game! Pirate Fluxx is like regular original Fluxx but with a piratical spin. So instead of tying together things like milk and cookies, how about a sword and a flintlock pistol? Or a canon and the powder monkey? Deserted island and a treasure map? This is my favorite edition of Fluxx! YARRRR!!!

Warriors Enter the Clans
by
Erin Hunter
merlins.crazy.mom
, September 24, 2013
Two books in one is always a good deal, and that's exactly what this is! The first half contains the Secrets of the Clans book and the second half is the Code of the Clans book. So if you already have read those two books, don't be disappointed that this is a copy of those two combined. I enjoyed the Secrets half better. It's a whole bunch of short stories, most of which are told in first 'person' from the view of one of the clan cats. So you get to enjoy seeing things from different points of view and from each clan. The downside is it reads like a book for younger readers. The tone seems to be set for a younger reader than the series books. The second half was worth reading because we find out why the Warrior Codes are so important. Unfortunately most of the codes have been put in place from something bad, sad, and/or tragic, so I found it rather depressing, which is why I only gave this book 3 stars.

Warriors Field Guide Secrets of the Clans
by
Erin Hunter
merlins.crazy.mom
, September 24, 2013
I absolutely adore the Warriors series by Erin Hunter, but this one was different. It seemed to be written for younger, less experienced readers. It's not a continuous story; it's a whole bunch of short stories, told by different cats from all 4 clans. There is a lot of history about the clans and there are some really great illustrations of the different clan cats we've come to know and love. But because it is written at a lower reading level I can't give it a full 5 stars. It's well worth buying and reading, just not what I was expecting.

Battlefield of the Mind for Teens Winning the Battle in Your Mind
by
Joyce Meyer
merlins.crazy.mom
, September 16, 2013
Battlefield of the Mind 'teen edition' is upbeat and full of great information written in modern day language and using examples that todays teens can easily grasp and relate to. Like using a broken computer as a metaphor for when something is broken in our life. Joyce Meyer uses alot of biblical principles with scripture attached to help teens understand the importance of thinking more positively. She emphasizes that 'normal' thinking is not the same as healthy thinking and has plenty of personal examples that she shares. I think this is a great book for teens, especially if they are having personal difficulties with negative thoughts about themselves.
