Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Constellation of Vital Phenomena
by
Anthony Marra

The things with which to be impressed in this book are varied and unending. Anthony Marra is an absolute master with words. He uses verbs, nouns, phrases, with such ease in new and interesting ways that the simplest description can stop you cold with beauty and new meaning. Words find themselves put into new situations, where they add complexity to every concept simply by being twisted in a way they have not been before. Every shirt, every detail, every person has a story and a context and life. Rarely have I read a story that was so beautifully written, so heart-wrenchingly poignant when discussing tragedy and humanity, and so compelling. The research has been done so well that you can see through a window into Chechnya. Absolutely, wondrously beautiful.

Shards
by
Prcic, Ismet
ReaderDano
, October 17, 2014
Shards is set in Bosnia in the midst of the war in the 1990's, and the largely autobiographical novel does more than just tell a story. It grapples with memory and the difficulty of understanding the childhood you feel you remember, and the haunting question: what if I had made a different decision? Prcic constantly invents new ways to express fear and loneliness. It is beautifully written, beautifully human, and unlike many a modern piece of fiction/memoir, the story is so compelling you will not be able to step away. Please read this book because it deserves your love.
