After Alice

I am halfway through the crazy tale! I almost gave up on it after the first 20 pages or so, but then...all the "I don't know what that word means, I will have to look it up!" pauses, and the references to all kinds of interesting places in England, of the time period...well, I am still reading! Very unusual. I like the extra characters that have been introduced. I would love to know how Maguire came up with them. The possible romance of two of those characters intrigues me. Truly a Wonder of a story!

Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Novels and Stories: Volume 1
by
Arthur Conan Doyle

I have been fascinated by Sherlock Holmes for years. I have managed to read, collect, or locate many of Doyles works. This is a wonderful addition to my collection! Enjoying the many authors who are taking up the quest to continue writing about Sherlock, his family, his cases...like Laurie King..so that we may continue to enjoy one of the world's favorite mystery solvers, is a great treat!

Mr Was

I was scrolling down the library listings of books that were about time travel when I came across this title...it was something I had not noticed before. "Mr. Was, written by Pete Hautman, c. 1996, is one of those rare books that has me asking, "why have I not heard of this before?" Perhaps I wasn't reading as much in 1996. Who knows, but I think this book should be added to your list of time travel favorites. It is odd, not your usual time travel tale. I loved the format...different, the storyline...different. The cover of the paperback was haunting, as is the story.. I read this in one day...unusual for me. This story also addresses serious family issues...again an odd setting for a time travel story.

Girl Who Could Fly

Victoria Forester

The Girl Who Could Fly by Victoria Forester is a fun read for children, teens and adults. I enjoyed the way miss Forester began the story of Piper McCloud. A wonderful tale about being true to yourself, and not letting your uniqueness be taken away. None of us should be forced into a mold, to become like everyone else. Embrace your talents. Let them soar. We meet a wonderful cast of characters in a twisty plot. I am looking forward to a possible sequel!

Falling into Place
by
Amy Zhang

I'll admit it, I picked up "Falling into place" by Amy Zhang out of curiosity. Even though Young Adult Lit is one of my favorite genres, I wasn't sure it was something I would enjoy reading. Surprise! From the dedication page (which I always read) to the last page, I was entranced, caught up in the simplicity of the writing, that was telling the complicated story of Liz Emerson, your "typical" high-school junior. I enjoyed the format Amy used...you don't know who is relating the events until...! Written in the here-and-now, with flashbacks, you can't help but be caught up in Liz's life. I would recommend this to all my Young Adult readers. The story is very true, to what many teenagers' lives are like, today. Perhaps it will provide some answers to their questions about "why is my life like this?". I would also encourage parents to read this great book, along with their child. Life is so hectic, we get wrapped up in our own affairs, sometimes to the exclusion of our children. The bottom line...this book is filled with hard-to-swallow real truths, about what happens in the day-to-day lives of our kids. Congratulations Amy, for writing a wonderful first book. I looked forward to your next one!

Gutenberg's Apprentice
by
Christie, Alix

As a lover of historical fiction, I am usually enticed by the book jacket, of most books I read. I find that if the book jacket catches my eye, I end up loving the book...so far that has held true! "Gutenberg's Apprentice" written by Alix Christie, aroused my curiosity, with it's 1871 illustration. I am enjoying the story because it is written from the young ambitious Peter Schoeffers' viewpoint. Peter is happily stationed in a 'scribes' profession where he is successful, when "his foster father, a wealthy merchant and bookseller, summons him home." Peter then meets Johann Gutenberg, the inventor of the method of bookmaking with a machine called a 'printing press'. Being a scribe, Peter, does not look favorably, on this machine. Peter's entire life is changed by the one summons. Faith, trust and ingenuity are highlighted, in this well-written tale As we know, the printing press, becomes one of the most important inventions in history, as well as changing the world of communication, as it was then known.
