You Have Time for This: Contemporary American Short-Short Stories
by

You Have Time For This is a fascinating mix of flash fiction stories. In spite of the 500 word restriction - no story runs longer than a mere two-page spread - these are fully formed stories, not just sketches. The authors consistently manage to tug the heartstrings, pique the curiosity, and twist the knife with the same precision as if they had an entire novel in which to build up the story. A short disclaimer, however: because of their brevity and intensity, I can't recommend treating the slim volume as you would a cohesive book. While only the length of a bite, each story is a full course in itself. Allow yourself a moment to digest what you read before turning the page.

Forgive Me If I've Told You This Before

I've been looking forward to reading this book for a while now, and it's really lived up to my expectations. I don't often venture into YA, but the problems of coming to terms with who you are, dealing with the pointless cruelties life throws at you, and falling in love are all universal and ubiquitous. Triinu's struggles gave me insight into a time and a particular set of struggles that, as a straight woman, I have only been vaguely aware of. The story - that of a goth lesbian intellectualist, coming to terms with her identity, and struggling with the challenges of a small town high school - is written with such a candid voice and an unexpected humor that I found myself drawn in completely, loving every moment.

Close Is Fine
by
Eliot Treichel

I have a lot of mixed feelings about this book, but it's undeniably well-written. As far as my own personal interest, the stories were a bit hit-or-miss, but they're all intriguing and whether or not I liked the premise of the story consistently became irrelevant as I found myself growing irresistibly curious to find out what would happen next and how it would end. The slice of life stories range in tone from downright depressing to wryly amusing and Treichel's characters truly shine; they are diverse, interesting, and so wonderfully human. They're likable, despicable, pitiable; their actions and dialogue feel natural. The small-town/rural settings give me twinges of deja vu - I've seen, met, and known people just like these. All in all, a very good collection of stories.
