Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. So Much Pretty
by

This book is a beautifully written, yet haunting and unsettling story . . . comparisons to The Lovely Bones don't do Hoffman's novel justice. So Much Pretty is disturbingly realistic, and it lingered with me long after I was finished reading it. Hoffman is a skilled storyteller who deftly tells this story of violence against women and how in real life, there's never a logical explanation for it.

The American Nightmare
by

This documentary is a must for anyone interested in the social and cultural influences and the horror films of the late 1960s and early 1970s. The fact that these films appeared in the wake of the Civil Rights Movement, the Vietnam War, and the assassination of JFK is not a coincidence--and it is interesting and relevant to hear both horror directors as well as film scholars discussing the merit and social relevance of these films. Definitely worth viewing--and worth owning, esp. if you're a George Romero fan. Also, this contains some interesting interviews with David Cronenberg, who often doesn't get lumped with Romero, Hooper, and Carpenter.
