Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. We’ve all been there, so mad that we’ve said we’d like to kill someone. Of course we don’t really mean it and neither did grad student Dulcie Schwartz when she stormed at her professor, Roland Fenderby. But now Fenderby is dead, murdered, and Dulcie is suspect number one. True, she couldn’t stand the guy, he was threatening her scholarship, but she didn’t kill him. Now she has to find out who did and relying on the advice of her wise old cat Mr. Grey she asks for his advice. But he has none to give, as a matter of fact, he has nothing to say at all. Is Dulcie losing her beloved companion? This is a wonderful series for cat lovers. I introduced my sister (proud owner of 7 cats) and she can’t get enough

In post Civil War San Francisco, British nurse Celia Davies runs a free medical clinic for women in need. She has the support of both her half Chinese cousin Barbara and her loyal housekeeper Addie. She’s earned the trust and respect of many people in the city, including a young orphan named Owen. As the book opens, Owen has found a body in the basement of his new employer’s, Martin and Company’s, cellar. The firm has a reputation for doing whatever it takes to procure and sell real estate in the city. When Owen tells Celia what he’s found, she turns to police detective Nick Greaves for help. Unfortunately, the prime suspect is the husband of Celia’s best friend….and one of Nick’s worst enemies. Well written and researched, this is a historical mystery that made for a splendid read

Nora Farrell’s Tuckahoe, Maryland beach house is more than just a vacation getaway. All the most important events of her life have happened there; her marriage, her decisions to have a child and more. Now, with her husband dead, Nora still returns every summer and has kept up her summer get togethers with best friends Margo and Emine. This year, though is fraught with problems, the beach house is under threat, Margo’s marriage is failing and Emine is having a hard time running the family cafe and keeping her willful teen daughter under control. As the women get together for another June vacation, they begin to realize that home may have nothing to do with a place and everything to do with the people you surround yourself with. I really loved this book; it reminded me of Dorothea Benton Frank’s earliest (and best) novels

With a name like Polyester, what can you do but run a fabric store. Poly runs Material Girl in San Ladron, California and she’s getting ready to join in the festivities for the annual beauty pageant. Poly will be providing fabrics from her store to create, stunning, glorious, glistening gowns. But things are put on hold when millionaire Harvey Halliwell, the man who revived the city’s citrus industry, is found murdered. The only suspect is mechanic Charlie Brook, one of Poly’s good friends. It looks like she’ll have to get busy proving her friend is innocent by tracking down the real killer. Crafters will love this series, with lush descriptions of beautiful fabrics, Poly is a smart, take no prisoners heroine

In 1944 twins Pearl and Stasha arrive at Auschwitz with their mother and grandfather. The girls are immediately separated from their family by the monster the world knew as Dr. Josef Mengele to become part of his "Zoo". Mengele kept twins, triplets, albinos, giants, dwarves - anyone he deemed unusual and performed terrible experiments on them. Pearl and Stasha have an unbreakable bond, they can read each other's minds, feel each other's pain - all of which makes their captivity at Auschwitz even worse. As the war draws to a close, the twins are separated and Stasha vows to find her missing half, no matter what the consequences. This is an incredible story that shows the depravity humans are capable of, but also the tremendous ability to love, forgive and move forward. This is a story I will never forget
