Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Moby Duck The True Story of 28800 Bath Toys Lost at Sea & of the Beachcombers Oceanographers Environmentalists & Fools
by
Donovan Hohn
Josh W
, July 14, 2011
On the surface, this book is the true story of nearly 30,000 plastic bath toys that escaped from a giant container ship and spent the next decade circling the ocean, much to the delight of beachcombers and to the dismay of environmentalists. What makes it a great read is the sense of wonder that Hohn captures, on topics ranging from the pollution caused by plastics to the science of mapping underwater currents.

Stones into Schools Promoting Peace with Books Not Bombs in Afghanistan & Pakistan
by
Greg Mortenson
Josh W
, December 17, 2010
Stones into Schools will radically change your perspective on Afghanistan and Pakistan. Mortenson takes his readers on a an epic journey through some of the most dangerous places in the world, from Taliban-controlled Afghanistan to Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan, all in an effort to support local wishes and create schools for a generation that has had few educational opportunities. I read this without having read Three Cups of Tea, and found that I was not at a loss at all. Mortenson's message, that long term stability will be built on a base of locally-run schools, is hopeful when all other news coming from this part of the world appears otherwise. Recommended for readers who want to gain insight into the reality on the ground in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

To Kill a Mockingbird
by
Lee, Harper
Josh W
, December 17, 2010
Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird is a gem of a book and well-deserving of its status as one of the best of the 20th century. Lee masterfully weaves together stories of adolescent exuberance, mysterious events, and a rape trial set against the background of the segregated South. Atticus Finch, seen through the eyes of his daughter, stands as an example to the world of what fathers can be- gentle and strong, wise and loving. To Kill a Mockingbird is just as powerful now as it was when it was written and should be on the shelf of every book lover. A perfect book for young adults, fathers and justice-seekers everywhere.
