Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I am a huge Scarpetta fan...of the early books that is. I think Ms. Cornwell has taken a bad turn in telling these stories. I got this book for Christmas, from my hubby who knows I read Ms. Cornwells books. I was very disapointed. I no longer like Lucy, Marino or for that matter Scarpetta. I find it hard to even try to connect with the caracters because they have become pale shadows of what they once were. Ms. Cornwell needs to go back to the gritty, tell it like it is prose of her earlier works. The heck with: clothes, cars, and "oh pity poor me"ism. Give us back the Scarpetta of earlier books who was not worried about Benton's feelings for her but about the poor deceased person who's tale needs told. Give us back the Marino who wanted to catch the bad guys, not obsess over Scarpetta. Give us back the Lucy who loved her computers and learning what they could do.

Full Dark No Stars
by
Stephen King

This book is Mr. King at his finest. I first started reading his books in my senior year of high school, "Carrie". He has written some fine stuff over the years, but this just may be his best book EVER. Mr. King is very good at taking us to those dark places that we really don't want to go to, and making us enjoy the trip. "Full Dark, No Stars" are four short stories that keep you coming back to see what happens to the protagonists. You may not like the choices some of them make, but you can see the logic behind them. If you have never read a Stephen King book because you just don't like what he writes, pick this one up.
