Tall Trees of Tokyo
by
Matt Wagner

The book is stunning. I’m not any kind of an art critic, but I like to look. What makes the Tall Trees series so great and different is the little peek into the artist’s lives. This is my first Tall Trees book, and I’m eager to check out Portland and Paris too. But I chose Tokyo because it’s very high on my list of places to visit. With the little peak into a normal day for these Tokyo artists, I now have a tiny idea of what to expect from a visit. The art is fantastic, and flipping through this book is something I can see myself doing time and again. The hand written responses just make me feel a little connected to these talented individuals.

Tolly

This book is stunning! It’s so unique, instead of drawings the artist uses photographs of adorable, and beautifully made little sets. Tolly is a 3D statue type of art piece. With a simple but heartwarming story about being brave enough to follow dreams and not let fears and doubts get in the way, this book would be a lovely addition to any child’s bookshelf. Plus hhh uses the singular ‘they’! This makes me so happy, more books should have the singular “they.”

The Field Guide to Drinking in America: A Traveler's Handbook to State Liquor Laws
by
Ganong, Niki
Bryn
, July 01, 2018
This is such a fun guide, for both alcohol connoisseurs and casual imbibers alike. The books is very logically divided up by region, making it easy to find the state or states you’re interested in. Each state includes a fun historical anecdote about the states liquor laws, then the guide delivers quick reference helpful information. I read up on the states I’m familiar with and I still learned some fascinating facts. Overall this little guide is fun to browse through before traveling in the states. It’s a great way to be prepared for drinking in and visiting any states.

Buckminster Fuller Poet of Geometry Written & Ilustrated by Cole Gerst
by
Cole Gerst
Bryn
, June 28, 2018
I didn’t know who Buckminster Fuller was until I read this book. Gerst states early in the book that he is not a writer, but an illustrator. This makes the biography feel very conversational and easy to follow along with. Plus the illustrations are outstanding. You can read it cover to cover and get a chronological biography of this great inventor. Or you could browse the illustrations and learn about which ever invention intrigues you. Either way this book makes a beautiful addition to a bookshelf or coffee table, I know it looks great on mine!

Tilikum Crossing, Bridge of the People: Portland's Bridges and a New Icon
by
Donald Macdonald, Ira Nadel
Bryn
, June 28, 2018
For people who love bridges, love Portland, or are simply interested in how such structures are designed. This delightful little book is filled with easy to grasp information both technical and historical. It takes you on a journey through the history of bridges in Portland. Then explains all the challenges met to create Tilikum Crossing. I’m pretty local, and I had no idea what went into this bridge. The designers were completely conscientious of the river’s habitat, of being green to fit in with Portland, and to please the artistic eyes of the city. I now can’t wait to find the time to walk across America’s longest pedestrian bridge. It lights up in relation to the water level! How fascinating is that? Anyway, enough with the spoilers, this book is a quick read, full of interesting history and bridge building facts; plus it includes several illustrations from the architect.
