Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. I have read about four of the Deborah Knott books in this series and I like them. Deborah is a normal, smart, independent woman with a huge family - who are also mostly normal. I get tired of protagonists being hounded by annoying family or friends and never saying "no" or "but out". This family is not like that; yes some of them "but-in" but Deborah sets up normal boundaries and doesn't let them run her. I like the relationships and I usually cannot figure out the mystery before the end. Also she doesn't normally do anything obviously stupid that puts her in danger. This one, of the four I've read so far, is the best. It is well written and there is no obvious "bad guy". All of the characters are interesting and real. Also the men in Deborah's life don't spend all of their time telling her to keep out of the current murder etc. Try this book - you may get hooked on the Knott family! I usually learn something too. This time about carnivals.

Very, Very funny story. Right from the start I was LOL. The characters are vividly depicted - you can picture them right away. The book takes place on a small university campus and the characters and feel of the campus is well written. The plot is good too. A classic mystery I reread every year.
