Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. The God of Small Things
by
Roy, Arundhati

The topic is an important and painful one, but the writing is what really took my breath away. The rhythm of this book is unlike anything I've ever read - the author tells us what will happen, then circles ever closer filling in details like a spirograph. If you care about Indian culture or classism in its many forms, read this book. But if you care about writing, let this book seep into your pores.

Head Check What It Feels Like to Ride Motorcycles
by
Lewis, Jack
CodeAmazon
, July 27, 2015
I'm a rider, but I don't read motorcycle magazines. Most of the articles dwell on displacement and specifications, and even the 'interest stories' usually don't have a level of writing that can hold my interest for long. Certainly nothing I'd read and re-read. Lewis is different. I can (and have) read his work over and over, and I still catch my breath in places, admire a turn of phrase, or realize he's elucidated a thought I hadn't quite managed to have. If you love motorcycles, you should definitely buy this book. If you love someone who loves motorcycles, get two copies. You'll learn why we risk our lives for these crazy mechanical beasts, and your friend isn't going to loan you their copy. ;-)
