Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Fiery Trial Abraham Lincoln & American Slavery
by
Foner, Eric
NW Girl
, January 01, 2011
Given how many books are published about Lincoln each year, you have to wonder whether anything new can be said about him. But Foner's book shows that there is still much to learn about the president commonly identified as the Great Emancipator. This is an amazing book, placing Lincoln the politician within the context of his times. One of Lincoln's most perplexing contradictions was his ability to simultaneously hold antislavery and racist views. Foner shows that Lincoln was not all that different from many of his contemporaries. He also shows how Lincoln the politician could respond to changing political circumstances, ultimately shifting from gradual to immediate abolition of slavery. Yet, Foner resists the urge to glorify the Great Emancipator instead confronting head on his flaws as well. Without a doubt the best book I read in 2010.
