Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Humbling, and important on many levels. Michelle, Debbie and Desma will stay with me for a long time.

One of those books that truly sneak up on you. A story about two lonely people: a 550 lb man living in isolation in his Brooklyn brownstone, and the woman who becomes his pen pal. These two people desperately want to make connections with others, but, because of his weight, and her chronic illness and addictions find that to be almost impossible. I appreciated the way the author dealt with the addictions of the characters (food and alcohol), and its affect on those around them. The relationships were honest and true, and I loved the character of Kel. Amazing book.

Tiger Tiger A Memoir

Its almost impossible to write about this book. 'Disturbing' doesn't begin to describe this memoir. Except this story about a girl and a pedophile took place in urban NJ where I lived, close to my neighborhood, and in an elementary school where I briefly worked. (thank god I wasn't working there when she was there). It rang true, which just added to the constant nausea I felt as I read it. But this can happen, and neighborhoods shouldn't ignore the signs.

I read alot of memoirs, and this is, hands down the most disturbing for a few reasons. One: it chronicles the experiences of a young girl and how a pedophile was able to insinuate himself with her and her family. Two: I lived in the area where (and at the same time) the book takes place. Three: a reminder that even 'good' kids have to deal with horrors at home. A haunting read.

Not an easy subject, but one that is handled comprehesively, and with respect.

Not just a story about two damaged young men who decided that mass murder was a viable choice, but a study of trauma, memory, the media and all of its problems, corruption in law enforcement, religion, and 'the truth'.

I read this book on vacation in Vermont, which was a perfect spot to put into practice everything I was reading. An important book read at the right time, helping me make changes in the way my family eats and purchases food.

Triangle
by

A historical event (the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire), aging, family secrets, and musical DNA combine to tell a very gripping, (but fictional) story about a 106 year old woman who was witness to a seminal event in US womens and labor history.
