Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Lets just start off by saying that at 900 pages in length, the author could have broken up the story into a trilogy and thereby expanded on some of the later plot lines. The first 600 pages were interesting but a bit slow-going. The final 300 pages seemed rushed and a little erratic. Throughout the novel, fictional mathematical and monasterial names and terminology are used ... but a detailed glossary is included to assist in the deciphering. I just wish the latter thrid of the storyline didn't jump around and then end so abruptly. Its almost as if Stephenson realized he needed to end the story soon and just closed the door on the characters' lives, hoping the readers wouldn't notice. Well ... I noticed.

John L. Sullivan: The Career of the First Gloved Heavyweight Champion

A great book about a great man. Sullivan was not only the Michael Jordan or Tiger Woods of his generation, he was more popular than the presidents of the era. Every boxing historian needs to read this. Every fan of American history needs to read this. Although replete with details of bareknuckles fighting and the man's statistics, what I took from the text has more to do with the societal craving for an icon like this. Americans have needed their idols for longer than we might have thought.

At first, I had planned giving this book to my 11 year old son. After reading a few pages, I realized that it would be a quick road to divorce. No young, slightly evil kids needs to gain any ideas from this text. However, much of it was fun reading for me! Just keep in mind that parts are ridiculously dangerous, others are just common sense. Still, its a fun and fast read.

How to Be a Villain Evil Laughs Secret Lairs Master Plans & More

Really. Who doesn't want to take over the world? Granted, this book is a bit campy and humorous, but shouldn't a potential dictator of the Earth have a strong sense of humor? Hence the evil laugh. Just get yourself some semi-reliable henchmen, an underground lair conveniently located beneath a dormant volcano, and perhaps a few sharks with friggin' laser tied to their heads!
