Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Her Fearful Symmetry

This Gothic tale is about twins and ghosts. Elseth Noblin dies of cancer in London. She leaves her apartment to her two 20 year old nices. Julia and Valentina Poole are the children of her twin sister, Edie. To inherit the place they must live in it for a year and their parents may never set foot in it. To add to the creepiness, the apartment is next to the Highgate Cemetery. I found the ghosts far more interesting than the living. The two mail male characters, Martin and Robert, seemed to me to be too much alike. Even with all the problems I had with the characters I found this to be a compelling read. It's a good read for the dark days of winter.

Christmas Cookie Club

Every year, on the first Monday in December twelve women get together to share cookies, recipes and stories. The past year has been very eventful for many of the members. Some express joy, others sadness, and one the terrible loss of a son. They listen, laugh and cry. Their bond strengthens each of the women as they get ready to move on to another year and look forward to another Cookie Club meeting. I loved the format. Each chapter highlights one of the women and starts off with the recipe for the cookie they have brought to the club. When you are finished reading it keep it in the kitchen. You are going to want to bake and share the cookies with your family and girlfriends.

Drawing In The Dust

Most of what I know about archaeology I learned from the Indiana Jones movies. I don't really have much interest in the various world's religions including the one I was raised with. So I was surprised when I was completely taken with this book. I couldn't put it down. It is the story of two forbidden loves, one modern and one ancient. Archaeologist Page Brookstone is on a dig in Megiddo, Israel when she is asked to excavate the grounds beneath the house of Ibrahim and Aisha Barakat. They say there are ghosts that haunt the site. Page finds the bones of the prophet Jeremiah locked in an embrace with a women named Anatiya. Also found are her scrolls. Page becomes involved in a forbidden romance of her own with Orthodox rabbi, Mortichai Masters. They struggle to bring the story of Anatiya and Jeremiah to the world. There are religious zealots, critics and others who would do anything to stop this message from coming to light.. This is a brilliantly conceived and gorgeously written novel. A rich novel that will stay with you long after you turn the last page.

I love books about cooking. I really love books that include recipes. This book has both the story and the food. This is an account of a women's dream to go to the world famous Le Cordon Bleu in Paris to study cooking. It is sometimes very funny some times sad. An excellent behind the scenes look at what happens and what it takes to get through this program. And all this happens far from the author's home in the US. A wonderful and entertaining story of one persons courage and determination to follow their dream. It will entertain and inspire you.

Searching For Paradise In Parker Pa
by
Kris Radish

I've loved everything ever written by Kris Radish and this does not disappoint. Lucky and Addy Lipton are headed to Costa Rica to rekindle their marriage. Lucky throws his back out before they leave. What follows is a funny and eye opening tale of how women get together to help each other out. Parker, PA will never be the same and neither will the men of the town.
