Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. The Tightrope Walker
by
Dorothy Gilman

Dorothy Gilman takes a very fresh approach to the "poor little rich girl" character. Amelia was very young when her mother committed suicide, then her emotionally distant father died soon after, and she grew up feeling unneeded and unnoticed. She's wandering through her life, without purpose. Until she buys an antique and finds a note: "They're going to kill me soon." I was enthralled from the beginning, couldn't put it down. Much like the Mrs. Pollifax mysteries. A roller coaster ride of twists and turns with realistic characters and very well plotted.

Scandal in Fair Haven
by
Carolyn G. Hart

Henrie O, retired investigative reporter, is on a vacation when murder intrudes. Deaths among the privileged and connected can make finding the truth difficult, if not fatal. Carolyn Hart gives us believable characters and situations. What she shows us about the relations between parents and children is heartbreaking.

Gates: A Samuel Johnson Tale
by
John Connolly

Has a "childrens" book ever been able to work in demons, scientific morality, hell, the Large Hadron Collider, divorce, St. Thomas Aquinas, just for starters, and make a riviting story? Connolly can! Is it classified as young adult because the main character is a kid? Unfair! It compares well to the best of Terry Pratchett. A gem.
